Hi! Any of you know if the White Scout Car were used by US forces in Normandy 1944? I havn't seen any pictures of it, but I may be wrong. Can you help? I'd really want to build Italeri's version of it, and place it in a dio.
Thanks in advance
Simon

Hey Simon
I'm almost certain that the White was involved in D-Day, and that being the case, I would say that it was involved in all aspects... Do a search with 'White Scout Car' and have a peruse...

Hi you guys,
I'm a new French member on this forum and saw your question.
I'm rather sure that the US troops stopped using the Scout car after the Tunisian campaign. They found it unreliable, too small, with poor rough terrain performance and small arms protection under requirements (eventually under what the Half track provided).
The remaining vehicles had been given to allied forces such as the Polish and the French. This is to say that no Scout car saw service in Normandy in the US army. The only most curious vehicles I saw in Normandy in US army are the famous two LVT2 saw in a color film on Omaha Beach (actually the two that were exposed in front of the Utah Beach museum) and one LVT1 saw on Omaha Beach two days after D-Day. I hope this answers the question.

I am very curious about this subject. I have seen and heard much debate on this subject. To my dismay I have never heard anything definitive. My father had a friend in the 3rd AD, I have heard him mention a scout car in the past. I always assumed that it was a white scout car, not the M8 or M20. Who has the definitive answer?

US Army used M3 Scout Cars in "Operation Husky" in Sicily 1943. This was after the Tunisian Campaign. Alot of older US vehicles saw action in the Italian Campaign as well, so maybe a few M3 Scout Cars saw action there.
Not sure about D-Day or beyond. If I'm not mistaken, General George S Patton used a modified M3 Scout Car at some point. But this was not in Normandy 1944.
Cheers !!

Not sure about US forces in Normandy but the Canadians were using it. Alot of the artillery units had them as command vehicles or for ferrying Forward observers up to the front.

Hi! Thanks for you comments.
I have found out, that the scout car were used by military police and rear echelon units during d-day. Íf any of you have any pics showing these sorts of units (mp and rear echelon unit) that would be helpful. Otherwise pleae be free to continue debating. It's quit interesting.

I've seen a film with a scout car coming off an LST @ Normandy. There is also a picture of Patton, DeGaulle in France in a scout car. I own an operate a 1/1 1943 M3A1 scout car. Have many pictures of her if anybody needs some..

The two Concord Pubs. books on British tanks in NW Europe has several pictures of White Scout cars. They were used for a variety of purposes including ambulances. Canadians used them also. The British often removed the machine gun ring which encircled the body of the vehicle for those not used in combat roles. Also, the rear stowage fittings for the .50 cal were removed. You can still make your Normandy dio, just change the nationality. there are some good pics of the vehicle taken during the war to be found on the internet and some colour pictures of restored vehicles.
