Hi folks,

I suggested the below campaign over at The Springbok Club a few weeks ago. After receiving overwhelming support from the SA community and a few more guests, I submitted a proposal to CCC...

Here are some details about it:

Name: SiyaAfrika... the isiZulu for "We are African"
Duration: 25 Nov 2005 - 25 May 2006. (6 months) Why end on 25th May? It's Africa Day, and the 43rd anniversary of the establishment of the OAU.
Rules/Regs: campaign will be any historical or factually based event to have taken place on the African continent or the islands geographically linked to it, excluding WW2 (we have a separate, shorter campaign for that – see below) . The submission should be historically accurate. The reason for this is to get people reading a bit more about African wars and historical events.

Not only allowing military subjects, but civilian as well - as long as it can be backed up by fact!

Examples of civilian could be Queen Cleopatra, dromedari train or even a traditional South African mini-bus taxi complete with shotgun wielding co-driver jumping a red light or driving up the emergency lane to push in front of the rest of the traffic.

Military examples are numerous:
Figures... nothing here need be said...
Armour... how about an Angolan T-55? There are numerous examples...
Aircraft... as per armour, the former Soviet Bloc sold off tons of outdated equipment to struggling countries and rebel groups...
Ships... how about slave ships... they are even still around today...

All I would like to request that each entry be accompanied by a small piece on the event or person it depicts factually supporting it. That way we also all get to learn a bit more about African history and possibly culture.

Click here for the original thread, and please also feel free to pop into The Springbok Club for a virtual pint of anytime...

If you are interested in WW2, have also proposed this campaign

Please show your support for these campaigns. They are the first of their kind.

Your votes are much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Rudi!!

Very interesting indeed - and I could make several Dios just with our Colonial Wars - (1960's - 70's Guinea-Bissau, Angola and Mozambique) or any 15th Century Caravels or ... I could be stating situations all day

Count me in!
It will be Interesting (to say the least)

Thanks guys, there are literally tons of possibilities with this...

Paul... I'd love to see that Blue train! Even if it isn't for this campaign

Rui... here are some Mozambique and Angolan war figures from Viriatus that I found a while back...

Diogo Cão (Angola - 1482)

Cuamatos Campaign (Southern Angola 1907)

Captain Vicente - Caçadores 1670 Moçambique (23-Dec-1968 African Wars)

Portuguese Commando (Eastern Angola 1969)

Portuguese Infantry, 21st (WW I - Mozambique, 1916)

Portuguese Cavalry (Angola 1970)

These are great looking figures.

If we get the go-ahead I'm thinking of some Brits from the early Cape Colony occupation, and maybe the Zulu Wars.

Yes I know - I have all of them..
But I was thinking of a different situation to enter the Campaign - perhaps the chance to make the portuguese version of the LCM that was used in Guinea-Bissau It's one of those projects that have been in my head for a long time - just needed the push :-)

The campaign idea is brilliant.. Now, if only I could get a hold off the Kitmaster Beyer Garrat locomotive ( HO/OO scale ).

I take it this campaign will also include Afrika Corps and 8th army desert rats :-)

Rudi, I’m in! Methinks an Israeli M50 during the 1956 ‘Suez Crisis’. If I can find photos or documentation – that is. Or maybe Airfix’s 1/72 Mirage F-1C(Z) during the ‘Border War’…

As almost every European country has played some part in an African conflict, as either Soldiers or Aid workers etc... There should be some very interesting scenes / models.

For example

The American involvement in Somalia. Maybe a few fantastic things that could come from “Blackhawk Down” dioramas etc.

The 1956 ‘Suez Crisis’, where France, the United Kingdom and Israel were ‘engaged’ with Egypt on Egyptian soil! Don’t forget the ‘United Nations Emergency Force’ that kept the peace.

EDIT: Almost forgot about the Numerous United Nations Peacekeeping Actions in Africa.

From The University of Iowa – Scholarly Digital Resources Center’s African Peace-Keeping Missions:

"Angola -- MONUA (United Nations Observer Mission in Angola).
Angola -- UNAVEM I, II, and III (United Nations Angola Verification Missions).
Chad/Libya -- UNASOG (United Nations Aouzou Strip Observer Group).
Congo -- ONUC (United Nations Operation in the Congo).
Liberia -- UNOMIL (United Nations Observer Mission in Liberia).
Mozambique -- ONUMOZ (United Nations Operation in Mozambique).
Namibia -- UNTAG (United Nations Transition Assistance Group).
Rwanda -- UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda).
Rwanda/Uganda -- UNOMUR (United Nations Observer Mission Uganda-Rwanda).
Somalia -- UNOSOM I and II (United Nations Operations in Somalia).
Western Sahara -- MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara)."

Eric,

You must have read my mind... I was just thinking about the fact that so many European countries had African colonies, and then also about the US and Australia's involvement in Somalia...

Great to have you aboard, mate!

Hhmmmmm This is interesting.....

There has happened enough stuff on the African Continent where the Dutch were involved. Things not too be proud of as the "Apartheid" (the ugliest word in the whole world is Dutch.... In any other language there is not even a word for that) And the slavetrade that we made big
But also the Dutch Farmers ("Boeren") who gave the English a hard time around 1900. Might invest some time in studying the Boer war.

Robert,

you are right... there are a great number of possible subjects here for... and yes, the Dutch were the (I suppose debatebly) the founding fathers of South Africa... but their influence was far beyond SA... The is also a strong Belgium, German, Portugese, Spanish, Italian, British, etc, etc, etc influence in Africa!

Don't forget all the 20th century subjects...

I've noticed no-one has mentioned WWI in Africa... how about Eritrea???

Well I’ve been thinking about the models that OOTB (Out Of The Box) would qualify for use in this campaign… I’ve come up with the following Aircraft, Fighting vehicles and trucks that can be used for the African campaign:

Tanks:
AMX-13 (Heller)
T-54, T-55, T-62 & T72 (ESCI, Italeri, Tamiya, Trumpeter, DML & ACE)
Sherman tank, just about any (Except the M4A2 for some reason) up to and including the M50 (not the M51 as far as I know)
Centurion (Tamiya)
T-34/85 (Tamiya, Alanger, Dragon, Trumpeter etc)
T-34/100 (Maquette)
M47 (Italeri)
M41 (Skybow, AFV Club, Tamiya)
Fiat-3000 (Tauro)
M13/40 (Italeri)

APC:
BTR (Maquette or Eastern Express)
BRDM-2 (DML)
M113 (Italeri, Academy & Tamiya)
LAV-25 (Italeri & ACE)
AML-60 reconnaissance vehicles (ACE)
AML-90 reconnaissance vehicles (ACE soon)

Helicopters:
SA 330 Puma (Airfix)
Alouette III (Airfix)

Aircraft:
Mirage III & F1 (ESCI, Italeri, Academy & Airfix)
Buccaneer (Airfix & Matchbox?)
Mig17
Mig19

Mig25

Others (Trucks, Artillery, Anti-tank etc…):
