Anyone know the max width for shipping by rail, ie tanks?

We rail out M1A1/2s all the time. Don't know the max dimensions, but you can look up the info on the various transportation manual available online.

I still find it strange that in Germany we could railload a tank in about 5 minutes, but here in the states, it takes about an hour with many chain hold downs.

I think it may depend on the route the train will go, as to the max width thatcan be shipped.
a d11r (cat dozer is 13' 6" wide w/o blade. I've seen them shipped via rail.

You mean it's less time to tie them down on the German railsystem? Or did they just take time to preplan the whole route? We tied our Leo's down, but the whole process took some 5-10 minutes.

I remember as a kid in the 70s seeing whole trainloads of equipment railed from Amsterdam (harbor) through our town to Germany. Aaahh, cold war! We thought it was very exciting.

I did hear some stories about one of our units shipping their Centurions in 1984 and they pulled of an overhang over a platform in Germany. Hee hee.
