You can do this using a wash over the decals, overspraying the whole model with a brown or tan colour, or using pastel chalks. At least, those are the techniques I have tried.

That's the same thing i do also. Apply the decals before i begin washes, drybrushing, etc, so that all the weathering goes on over the decals, enhacing the suggestion that they are painted on insignia.

I'd use pastels over the decals because if you aren't satisfied with the results you can remove it and try again as long as you haven't sealed the pastels.

Something I've done is to overspray a FINE MIST of the color the decal is placed on over the decal. Does that make since?
