Ike:
The Stug IV is abbreviation for "Sturmgeschutz IV" which means Assault Gun Mk 4.

The Sturmgeschutz were originally designed as heavy support for infantry and tank units. However as better cannon were mounted to them and the need for many more anti-tank capacities, the Sturmgeschutzen were utilized as AT vehicles more and more. Some panzer divisions fielded companies of them if the turreted panzers were in short supply.

Ike -

Most definitely and more notably from 1944 and on. The StuGs (III and IV) along with the other Panzerjagers from the PzKfpw IV chassis usually filled that role especially with Panzergrenadiers as well as the Panzer divisions as Pz Jaeg Abts. Your StuG IV would work in pretty much any front in 1944.

Ciao umustb,
The German assault guns were originally designed to provide immediate fire power to assaulting infantry. They protected the crews, thus allowing the guns to fight alongside the infantry. They did evolve to more of an anti-tank role for many reasons. They had a low profile. They were cheap to produce. They could mount more powerful guns. Finally, when Germany was running out of everything due to embargos and bombing, they could produce nothing else. Many Stugs even featured concrete on the fronts for protection.
Ciao for now
Rob
