Hi all
Thought I would post some pics of my new dio.
This dio depicts a Sd.Kfz 232 6 Rad scout car (Italeri 1/35) during training exercises in Germany which has unfortunately chosen a stream to go kaput in. The crew members are trying to assess what has gone wrong.
Had a lot of fun doing the groundwork and stream on this one. Probably a bit too much open ground actually!! Hope you like.

Ciao glenb,
Wow, what a great job on your first dio!! Very impressive! Is the water just white glue? If so, has it cured all the way dry to where it might appear clear? If it's completely dry, you might want to think about adding some color to it next time, just so the white will go away. The figures and vehicle might need a slight wash, just to give it more depth.
Your ground work is really great. I really like the use of different elements, like the rocks, fallen trees, grass and dirt! Great job!
Overall, a great effort. Congrats to you.
Ciao for now
Rob

Very nice for your first dio-it sure beats my first attempt-I would only offer what you already said, you have a lot of open area that could be filled with some trees or shrubs. I take it, your water isn't dry yet in the photo. If that's the case, it will clear up as it dries. Great work.

If you decide not to make it a training accident you could fill the open space by putting a few soldiers standing guard or searching the the enemy with binoculars.

You might have compressed the suspension on the middle set of wheels a bit more. It looks like the last set has risen of the ground and the angle of the ground doesn't look steep enough fo that. What the other guys said about the water. I do lole how you've made the front wheels look wet. That's a nice touch.

Nice dio...!!..Contrary to what the others say, i think the river looks great as it is. It looks realistic, muddy look to it...Not all rivers have crystal clear water but I'm not sure what is your real intention. What did u use for the water? And how to make the waves & ripples on the surface..?

The first thing I looked for was the rear wheels, and although not 100% at least you thought about it and made the effort to compress the suspension to fit the ground. It shows that you thought carefully about the model.
The stream - well I've certainly seen real water run that colour - especially over clay or chalk!
A good attempt for the 1st dio - lets see more in the future.

Thanks for all the observations and comments guys.
Psyfool the water is artist's acrylic medium. It did not dry completely clear as it had in smaller amounts before I committed it to the stream. This stuff took about a week to dry and as it got more gel-like I gently used a toothpick to guide it around the rocks etc.
Thanks again
Glen

For your first diorama you have a lot of good happening.
You've got
A nice finished base
A nice story - well told in word and 3D
A complete diorama
Suspension work
Nice groundwork
You were courageous tackling water on a 1st diorama.

Glen,
I think just about everything has been said by the others. Nice job on this and I can say I have seen plenty of mountain streams look exactly like you've portrayed during the spring runoff.

Nice work, Glen! I like your dio! Wish me luck, I'm still finishing my first! If it gets half as good as this one, I'll be happy enough! Congratulations!
Cheers and happy modelling!

Thanks guys for all the feedback.
Vanderboer thanks for your suggestions, I'm not offended but I have to disagree with a few of your observations...
Have to disagree with you on this one. This Woodland Scenics stuff is great. Possibly a bit bright from the camera flash.
If you look closely there is dirt all over the tyres. The ground it has moved over was not muddy, therefore no mud.
Again, look closely. The tyres are immersed in the water. And the vehicle has broken down so it cannot pull itself out.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

next time try using a different material for the grass like for example Heki or something like that, this is a bit monotone and looks unrealistic to me, maybe you can make it better by spraying it in different tones of green

the vehicle doesn't blend into its environment, I would add some mud under the wheels and the same colour to the wheels, trust me it works

-also I believe this vehicle was able to pull itself out of this position, it doesn't look to be stuck very deep, it looks more like its floating on the water...

Glen i think your dio looks great for the first one, you said you may have to much open space maybe you can put a small armored car in front of the other trying to pull it out of the stream that would fill the space up, just an idea and the ground work looks good to me.

It's a great topic you have chosen. Speaking from experience, that is exactly where you are going to break down. If you could only model rain, lack of sleep, hunger, and an unexpected cold snap..... :-)
