Ok everyone, I'm looking for reviews on the HMMWVs that are out now. I want to create a replica of the cal .50 truck I was on in Iraq and Afghanistan along with the ghetto armor add-ons. Thanks in advance for your help.

No review...just an opinion-

Tamiya's kits are the winners, hands down.

Academy's kits are second and are the BEST BUY winners! Can't beat 'em for the money, but are hard to find!

Again, its' just an opinion.

Tamiya's new HMMWVs are the best on the market. Here are reviews on them.
M1025

M1046

A close second, and the best till Tamiya released their new ones, is Academy. They have an M1025 weapons carrier, M998 highback softtop, M977 ambulance, and an M966 TOW carrier (which also includes all the M1025 parts and a driver and TC figure).

Blast Models does a bunch of AM sets for OIF HMMWV that include add-on armor sets.
Weapons Ring and Smoke Launchers OIF
OIF HMMWV Accessories
OIF Armored Doors and add-on armor
New Radial HMMWV Tires

Pro Art also does a SF DUMVEE (Desert HMMWV) conversion.
DUMVEE

Warriors is also developing an M1114 upgrade set as well, due out this fall.

That should get you going.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately I will have to pick up both, because the truck I was on was an odd-ball combo that the 82d Airborne uses. I'm sure Verlinden will appreciate the business too!!!

How as it a combo of the two? Any pics or can you explain it?

If you just need a few items from one kit or the other, I have lots of HMMWV spares and we can probably work something out. Let me know.

What Verlinden set you are planning to get? Be very careful - their "Hummer Weapons Carrier Detail Set", while adertised as "for Tamiya/Academy" is designed for Academy kit and many parts included in it will not even fit to Tamiya models!

Gino,

MIG Productions have already released M1114 conversion set for Tamiya kit, so there is an alternative to waiting for Warriors product: http://www.migproductions.com/MP/products/35254/35254.htm

I was the section leader of an Airborne anit-armor section. One section is composed of 2 gun trucks. Each truck is equiped with a TOW missile system and either a .50 cal M2, or a MK_19 grenade laucher. The rear of the truck is configured to store the TOW system and missiles, along with limited racks for the ammo for the secondary weapon system. We always had greater than 2x basic load, so there was not much available space. It is a three man crew: driver, gunner and truck commander. We had our stock doors removed and replaced with steel plate or a product, in very short supply, called armox. I will try to scan some of my pics and load them up here.

Well he needs to look a bit more carefully. The qualitative difference is ENORMOUS - the only game in town (in 1/35th scale) is Tamiya. In 1/72nd scale, the new DML Humvees are looking VERY nice indeed..Jim

That's because he has very old Tamiya kit of "Hummer with M242 Bushmaster". This kit was indeed Italeri plastic plus only a few new parts added by Tamiya.

New Tamiya kits (M1025 and M1046) are fully new toolings, not related to Italeri kits and are the best on the market.

Original Italeri kits are the poorest of all Humvees currently available.

As stated, the original Tamiya Hummer with M242 Bushmaster is the Italeri kit as are the two Revell of Germany HMMWV kits (M998 and M1038).

The new Tamiya kits are by far the best on the market. The Italeri/Revell/old Tamiya HMMWVs can still be built up into nice display pieces for the casual modeler. I did an article on the Italeri HMMWVs a few years ago: The Much Maligned Italeri HMMWVs.

Now here is where I am confused. You say that you fitted a TOW systems AND an M2 or MK-19 on the SAME vehicle? Or did you mean one of the two in the section had the TOW, the other with the M2 or MK-19? I remember having seen a TO&E of something like that. I've handled (but not fired) both personally and those things are too massive to be attached to the same vehicle that also has a TOW system. Now a SAW or M240B to the TOW weapons ring (as seen on my M1046) is a lot more practical.

Ditto on the Tamiya M1025 and M1046 (actually an M1036 if I remember right). I have both in my gallery (the M1025 has the Blast Weapons set which I highly recommend too).
