I made a somewhat significant change to the gallery today. You need to be a registered user (and logged in) to view photos. I decided that this was the best way to limit gallery use to those really interested in the hobby (and not some spider/spam engines crusing sites harvesting links and pics).

This has already resulted in a big increase in registerd users. 20 so far today and I only made the change about 6 hours ago. Yesterday for example we had a slow day with about 4 sign-ups.

Anyways I just wanted to alert everyone of this change and also to say welcome to all the new members. Hopefully this might encourage some of you to become even more active on the site.

Cheers,
Jim

Does this mean when I wish to link one of my pics to another site I can't as the viewers would need to be registered users to view?

I do not do this often but I do occassionly do it.

cheers

Hi All!

I think this is a very cool situation and I might add that, for a regular visitor to became a member, there's no charge - just join in and you will have full access!

It doesn't hurt and it doesn't cost you a dime!

Cliff,
If you put a link to your album then yes they would need to be registered and logged in to see the full size photos. They would still be able to view the album and thumb photos though.

If you embed a photo on an off-site forum those images will still show up (at least for now).

Thanks,
Jim

Wow....58 users in the past 24 hours. This is like 5X our average sign-up rate.

Yup....this seems to be a good thing.

Thanks all.

Logging out is very much optional. Unless you have other users on your PC using the site there is really no reason to logout. However staff and moderators using pc's away from home should logout when they can to avoid potential misuse of their user account by someone else.

To bad, I understand your decission and it is a sound one, but for me it is a (personal) problem.

You know that I have a lot of reference pictures put in the gallery and also my models and that on my personal site there are links to the gallery.

I had a mail from a visitor on my site complaining thet he could not see the pictures because of the restriction and I find this a shame.

Again, I support the understand the decission but I need to think about a new location for those pictures because I believe in the public domain of the internet.

Jim, I am not saing that I am removing pictures, please be clear about that, I just am saiing that I probably need to find a new location to repost these pictures for direct linking on my site

Ronny,
I understand the dilemma. Ironically the way you are putting the gallery into a frame on your site actually causes a cookie error when someone *does* try to login. So this person may have been complaining that he couldn't access them even after signing-up.

Armorama is not a good site to try to put into frames unfortunately.

By the way for people who want to link to a large photo in the gallery, simply put in the image file name and location, rather than the page that the image is on. So for example a good link will end with .jpg.

As for for the change itself. 64 user sign-ups last time I checked. We have never had that kind of activity before, so it would be hard to categorize it as a bad thing.

Thanks,
Jim

Tnx for letting me know, I will change those pages/links so they will appear in a new window

Also, I added a small bit of text to those pages with links (well almost, still working on it)

Most of these pictures or hosted on Armorama.

To view the pictures in a larger format you need to be a member.

This is free and worthwhile because Armorama is on of the best modeling related websites out there

So I hope to contribute and help a few new members this way

Thanks Ronny!

I admit I kind of wish there was a way to allow access for certain categories or even member albums. Maybe that is something I can suggest to the guys who code PhotoPost.

I realized yesterday we are very close to hitting 60,000 photos in the gallery. That is a staggering amount.

Cheers,
Jim

Or even make it a perk for subscription members. Although the memberships support the site, having the gallery to show your work is a great benifit.
I usually post my work on IPMS Stockholm as well, as Im a member, but this could mean "non-members of armorama" cant see it. I would rather support Armorama and pay for my hosting than have to use a second account and have the botheration of uploading twice.

Danny,
Lol...yeah and that doesn't even include the people browsing the gallery. I discovered a glitch a few weeks ago with the user tracking in the gallery. Did anyone else note that it always listed a few registered users and then said "and 1 unregistered user"? Lol...it always says "1". Which is obviously impossible. hehe

Jim,
I've always wondered about that 1 unregistered user, thought it was just me and my setup :-) Thanks for clearing that up.
