Hi
I recentley saw a picture of a sherman having its whirlwind engine taken out and a new one put in by a Mk 1 wrecker. Naturally this gave me an idea for a dio. However I dont' know whether anyone makes either the whirlwind engine or the Mk 1 wrecker. If any company does make either I would be grateful if you could tell me where i can get them from. Cheers. Nick

Try Verlinden. They make some engines and compartments for various tanks. I don't know if this is the right type of engine, but it will do as an example:

There may be something of use on this page:

Hello Nick

Don't know what a Mk1 wrecker looks like, but if money is not a problem, Accurate Armour has released 3 kits of WW2 US wreckers that could fit the bill....
#K108 Ward LaFrance M1A1 :

#K128S Diamond T 969 wrecker (soft cab) :

#K128H Diamond T 969 wrecker (hard cab):

All are available on www.accurate-armour.com

If thinking in 1/35 scale

Being there were different enigines used in the different variants of Shermans you need to be accurate as to which Sherman kit you select. I am not sure which engine you refer to as whirlwind (I'm assuming it's the radial engine) you would be limited to:

M4a and M4A1s which off the top of my head are these kits: Tamiya M4 Early, Italeri M4A1 and Dragon M4A1 Dragon M4 Hybrid/Composites. With all the upcoming new releases I can't remember if any M4s or M4A1s are coming out. Verlinden makes a radial engine. I believe there is kit with just the engine. There is another kit for the engine plus engine compartment

If you have other kits here is a quick list.
M4A2s used a diesel engine (I cannot recall anyone making this engine). Academy and Dragon have M4A2 kits as well as Italeri with the Marine Sherman that is convertible into an M4A2.

M4A3 used a V8. There is a V8 engine w/compartment from Verlinden. Tamiya M4A3(75), Tamiya M4A3(105), Tamiya M4A3E2, Tamiya M4A3E8, Italeri Marine Sherman, Dragon M4A3(76) BOB, Dragon M4A3E8

M4A4 used multiple engine (I cannot recall anyone making these either)

If you don't want to pony up for one of those rather pricey resin wrecker kits maybe the old Italeri M32 kit would be a good substitute. It will probably run you near $30US but that's less expensive than $90+ for the resin.

Just to pick the last nit, if you are actually talking abuot the Wright engine (based upon the Whirlwind aircraft engine) then only a very early M4A1 will do the trick as very early in the Sherman production cycle the Wright was exchanged for the Continental version of the same engine. Still a radial, but there is a significant difference in the engine pipework and the rear hull plate configuration. I suspect ou don't really care if it is the Wright or the Continental, in shich case, use the Continental as the vast majority of Sherman M4s & M4A1s were built with it.

Tank Worksop makes a fine Continental engine compartment for M4s & M4A1s. I think the Verlinden engine kit has accuracy problems, but don't hold me to that.

Tank Workshop make an M4A2 engine and, I think, an engine compartment with it. The Academy M10 kit also comes with this engine.

M4A4 used multiple engine

Known as the Chrysler Multibank. I have seen a resin engine and my little brain wants to say this used to be made by Tank Workshop, but I'm not sure I believe it this time.

the engine in question is the continental R975 radial used in the M4 and the M4A1
