In which scale?
For 1:35 I used to use plain old paper, painted in a leather color or green/tan for web slings. Cut to width using a sharp hobby knife, touch up the edges, and your good to go.
I say I 'used' to do it this way not because I've discovered any new technique, I just haven't built anything in many, many years But with care, the old paper method works very well.

I use the paper trick, and it looks pretty good. I like it!
And its easy to do to.

Paper does work well. Ive used this method and was well happy with it. Now I use sheet lead. I like how its sits better. If you really want to dress up your sling, aber makes PE buckles you can feed the paper through the little holes. Very effective detail and simple to use!

Wine bottle foil, a lead like wrapping. Hangs nicely, holds paint well, more durable and malleable than paper and responds to superglue. Best of all, it's free with the purchase of a bottle of Bella Serra wine!

I use wine bottle foil 99% of the time. I have used paper too.
I've heard of guys using masking tape strips, yogurt cover lids, coffee lids, etc. Anything thin maliable and cutable.

The paper method sounds good... I might try it out... just one thing... how do you attach the paper onto the gun? Glues used??

Lead foil or as Scott says anything thin maliable. I never used paper. It is much easier to give desired shape to the lead foil.

I use "Post-It" notes a la Guntruck method. Works well, is easy, you can get the paper to fold and drape the way leather would and is easily painted.
I cut the ends into a triangle, paint the nends black, then super glue to the rifle int he correct position. Works well for me, is very cheap and very easy. You can get tons of slings and straps out of 1 Post-It.
