Has anyone done any research on english airfields use by USAAF? I need to know if they had and or used runway lights? Are there any differneces in pavement markings? Other airfield details I'm forgetting???

Hi Rich,
What scale, size and aircraft are you wanting to model? that might help to narrow the focus. A generic question I think is to broad.
Sincerely,
Brian

hi,
First of all wich time period? I suppose 1943-1945. Is it a temporary airfield ,grass strip,or concrete runway?
I know yhe big airfileds used some kind of lights, but i'm nog sure about the smaller ones.
Try the aircraft forum, you'll have more succes there.

Rich,
The USAAF had some 400 bases in England at the height of activity. There were permanent airfields with concrete runways (mostly for light, medium, and heavy bombers) all the way to small grass airfields for fighter aircraft and everything in between.
There were emergency airfields as well and they often were not permanent setups.
As far as lights go some had stationary lighting and others had airfield light trucks (which had a series of lights and could cover a football field in area.
Most fighter and attack aircraft were relocated to airfields in France after D-Day and would have been anything but permanent. Being that close to the front the only lights they probably used were from the vehicles at the airfield if at all.
Whatever your project I don't think there is one way only to portray it. I suggest you use some artistic interpretation and have fun with it.
Good luck
Brian
