Hey Mike - also just take all the ideas in stride! I'd love to see your G/T too when you're done. Just build what you want - if it was a "real" vehicle, or one you imagined-up! They're ALL good! Share your inspiration

O.K., I'll play a little 'devils advocate' here. Kinda liked this hypothetical thread . Just to throw another log on the fire, how's about multiple Vulcan mini guns on the M113?

"just how much ammo can that there thang carry?"

Well - the M163 Vulcan on the cargo bed of a M54 would make an awesome "fourth generation" gun truck. I think if the weapon was employed in direct fire missions - meaning that it was used and encountered the enemy and got beat up a lot - then the vehicles with destroyed suspensions and running gear might have found their way into the trucker's hands.

The XM-134 Mini-Guns made their way to second generation gun trucks like Mighty Minny and The UNTOUCHABLE after being 'liberated' from wrecked helicopters. It is conceivable that Vulcan could have made it to employment as a gun truck weapon mount. The only thing I see here that might have caused a problem would have been weight.

The M113 APC Hulls were stripped of all components - to use elsewhere, but to also save weight and keep the M54's automotive performance high. These guys didn't park to duke it out with the VC if they didn't have to. The convoy hit the gas and sped through an ambush zone, with the truckers drawing and going after the enemy pockets while the cargo trucks sped by as best they could. A fully laden M163 Vulcan might have definitely cut into the M54's ability to remain agile enough to defend a convoy in this mode.

However, M123 Big Macks were there too - and the M125 10-ton cargo truck with an M163 Vulcan in the back would be my ideal "fourth generation" gun truck if things went on that long...

I can hear Tank Workshop getting orders right now for their M125 "Big Mack"... :-)

Sorry Gunnie...hehe, knew I'd lure ya in. lol. When you say M123 or M125 are you talking about the truck commonly known (by us commoner's ) as 'Big Foot'? If that's so, did the M123's or 5's have enough horsepower and gearing to 'get the job'done do you think?
Hmmmm, I can just see it now, a giant 10-ton guntruck barreling down the dirt road sprouting gattling guns like weeds...interesting image.

Sounds like a job for....Super Hypothetical Scratchbuild DioMan!!!!

LOL. Tread.

Tread - I'm not sure if the Mack M123 / M125 10-ton trucks were ever called "Big Foot". Honestly, the only Army cargo truck I know of that is / was called "Big Foot" is the modern-day M939 BMY-built 5-ton cargo truck - when fitted with the larger knobby tires instead of the standard military treads like found on the 10-wheeled M925 trucks. The older Big Macks were the haulers for the M15A1 & A2 semi-trailers - successors to the Dragon Wagon of WW II vintage. They were called Dragon Wagons too back in the 1950's, but more in reference to the loud noise their engines made when fired up. They say you can hear this baby coming from a long distance away.

Non-military Big Macks are used in the Logging industry today. I think the rig has more than enough raw power to carry a Vulcan on its back. In the convoy mission during the Vietnam War, the Big Mack tractors pulled heavy, outsided, loads. Though not outfitted with weapons (I haven't found one yet), some truckers named them and painted them up too. That truck could move out when they needed it too.

Hopefully Sabot or DJ sees this post - maybe they're familiar with another cargo truck besides the M923 that was tagged "Big Foot".

That would be a pretty good guntruck idea. To have the M113 with the Vulcon cannon on top of it. A friend of mine sent me a few pictures of a M113 with the XM-123 Mini gun in the front of the M113. If someone can tell me how i can post pictures in the Forums i'll post them.

Mike,

I think if you've got them scanned already and your own website, it's easiest to link to them like this:

""

If you're not running your own little corner of the Internet, then it's best to scan them and send an e-mail to Lt. Colonel Starkweather so that he can setup a folder for you to upload them here on this forum in the Gallery.

:-) Sorry 'bout that - it actually went looking for an image!

In your Reply window, click on the BBCode hyperlink - that'll tell 'ya how to do it!

Now that I described it to Tread - a "Big Vulcan" would make a pretty cool looking hypothetical gun truck...

Hmmm...

Let's 'push' the envelope a little more. What I had in mind was a Guntruck, let's call her 'Puff', (yeah, I know, I know ) that has four (4) mini guns, stolen from wrecked Huey's, mounted to the four corners of the cargo bed. They would have accompanying armour shielding for the gunners, and seperate ammo feed compartments below the floor of the cargo bed.
(and since we're going all out here) The motor pool mechanics, have beefed up the horsepower (didn't they do that in 'Kellys Hero's) and geared it right for maximum acceleration. There are armoured side skirts that hang down to protect the top half of the tires similar to tank skirts, and 2 CDL (is that right) type search lights (or regular style)mounted on the 50 cal. ring mount facing left and right.
Oh, I forget to mention, Dale Earnhardt's at the wheel...

Tread.

I know, a little over the top, but fun anyway. Heck, I might consider building it! Of course, where would I get the 4 mini guns from? VP? AA? Jaguar?

As far as the XM-134 Mini-Guns, I know of two options. First is to swipe them out of a DML gunship model kit. Expensive and a waste of a kit. Second, buy them from Legend Productions. #LF1038 is a set of two XM-134 Mini-Guns made out of resin. The set comes with four 40mm ammo cans too - two of which are opened, with separate lid and latches. I got mine through Squadron Mail Order last year. A good way to go for arming your gun truck.

Okay DJ & Tread - see what havoc you've wrought! I enclose a photo from a few minutes ago to officially record I've started the fantasy gun truck "Big Vulcan"! I unceremoniously shoved aside my M38A1 Willys MD Jeep to whip some 10-ton truck parts into submission and I thought you'd like to see how big "Vulcan's" tires and engine block are in relation to the Jeep.

"Big Vulcan" will be a monster!
