Does any one have a recommendation for a color to use on Iraqi vehicles, preferably as an acrylic? I have test sprayed both Model Master acryl armor sand and sand and both seemed a little too dark when compared to my reference pics. The armor sand war a bit too far off but sand was closer. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It will be for a DML BRDM-2. Thanks for your help.

Charred metal and rust.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Pretty much and sandy-grey color will work. Don't think there was a standard color for Iraqi vehicles. I saw them from shades of really light, almost white, sand to a dark sand gray and everything in between. Also saw some sand with green sploches for camo.

Thanks for the prompt response. The few battlefield pics I have been able to obtain of BRDM-2s have been the very white color. Most of what I have found are museum pics and seem to be darker although a few of them seems to be repaints. The rest look like armor museums have gotten chipped paint fever too. Also what was the base coat color, I can’t really tell from the pictures but it seems to be where the paint has chipped off it is either black or a dark soviet gray.

Hello Daniel,
It depends on what your trying to model. Last year during my stay in Taji Iraq, most of the vehicles were colored a very faded tan, the color that readily comes to mind is Tamiya Buff straight out of the bottle, now if you were making a newer well maintained tank, I would try and use Tamiya buff mixed with a little black, and for an even more faded used look mixed with a little white. This is just my humble opinion.

Best bet is Model Master US Army and Marines sand...spray it on as is, then mix a little Sand at about 50/50 and use that for highlighting large panel areas. Looks fantastic and it is authentic.

Be carefull using "Museum" type photos. At Ft. Sill and other places they would repaint "Trophies" with whatever sand/tan paint the maintenance guys had on hand...not authentic anyhow.
