..hey i noticed tamiya had released a 'limited edition' of their 1/35 US 'red ball express' 6x6 truck-
and browsing through Luckymodel's site gave me this:
US RedBall express truck
.. and it comes with loads of unbeleivable stuff for an instant diorama.... plus 3 figures too!
has anyone built this kit? are the model & figs any good?

That link is not for Lucky Model it's for Hobby Easy? Luckymodel do have the kit though, for $27.69. It's the same vehicle with some new figures. Always been a great kit, goes together like a dream, all the other bits and pieces are Tamiya 'oldies', or bits from other kits. I was thinking of picking up a couple of these for myself.

The Truck itself is a real good build. But this is only a few older Tamiya kits in a new box and is nothing new. Tamiya has formed a bad habit of reboxing old kits and charging more for them.

I have not seen this kit on sale locally here in Australia so have nothing to compare the price difference between this kit and the older truck only kit.
I do know however that it is far cheaper for me to buy the old kit in HK then to pay $56AUD plus for it here. I also have been told that some, if not all, of the figures are from Tamiyas Dragon Wagon kit and if they are they are nice figures as well. So I guess it is down to personal choise on which one to buy.
cheers

Guess who bought the "old" kit a few days before Tamiya anounced the "Red Ball" limited edition
Im not sure how much extra Tamiya will be charging for this kit in the UK but after seeing the extras with the Red Ball express I ended up loading mine up with parts from Italieri's field workshop (which I picked up for £2.99) plus a few extras from my scrapbox.
p.s. Is it just me but is the driver figure a little in the diminuative size , he is still being painted hence no steering wheel (and mirror attached as yet its a little in the delicate side ) lol

I have just seen (on another site) that the r.r.p. of the 'Red Ball Express' in the States will be no less than $57... Compares rather poorly to Lucky Models $27 - No comments!...Jim

Ahhh... Tamiya is just killing us with their exorbitant kits with exorbitant prices.! Way to go... now lets see if DML does something like that.. :-)

LOL thought that may happen. If it is that way in the States it will be nearer $70AUD here I am guessing. Oh well when I want some more of them (the original kit that is) I will buy in HK again.

From the reviews I've read the kit and the assorted bits and pieces seems pretty decent.
However, if you want to build a Red Ball express dio with this you may want to think about replacing the heads on the figures to African ones.

I still find it amazing how much cheaper I can get many kits from HK, than here, even with the postage.
Here's another little money saving tip.........
If you are simply going to order a few items for future projects, or to build up the stash, go with the cheapest shipping, if you can handle the wait. That's what I do now. You can actually get an extra kit with the shipping savings.
OH you need patence..... to do this though. :-) :-)
