I would go with Eduard's PE set # 35454. It has a nice collection of detail parts.
The other one I would choose which has even more details is Aber's set # 35032. You can see a pic of Aber's here: Aber's M4A3 PE Set

The Aber set is excellent. The third model I built was a Sherman with Aber photoetch. The instructions may look intimidating but photoetch is a great challenge that will greatly contribute to the realism of the model. Challenge yourself to use as many of the parts as possible and have fun,

If you don't want all the extras in the Eduard and Aber sets that are either useless or to small and fiddly to mess with, you might want to consider the FineMolds set. You get headlight and taillight guards, periscope guards, iron sights and hatch hasps -- enough for TWO vehicles in one set. A bargain in my book.

With the Tamiya M4A3, you may also want to replace the gun barrel with a Rubio or other aftermarket tube. The road wheels and idler wheels are still junk, with detail on one side only (and that detail is missing the grease fittings). Might want to scavenge some new ones from another kit or look for aftermarket.

The tracks are OK, but if you feel up to it you may want to try out some RHPS tracks.

Don't forget to block the undersides of the sponsons with some sheet plastic.

I am just about at the end of my PE patience. I bought the Eduard set for the USMC M4 Sherman. It costs more than the model. The .50 parts are superior, the covers for the hatches are great. However, it contains a mass of so what parts that one can easily live without. It is debatable that the cost justifies the effects. Ergo, you may wish to consider the FineMolds Bob spoke of as an alternative. Definitely replace the main gun.

What's a good on-line source of Fine Molds Sherman etch set? I checked Squadron and Greatmodels (my two frequent stops on the net)
