Pretty easy actually. All you need to do is reroute the exhaust so it goes along the right side frame and comes out between the rear wheels. Fill the hole on the right fender where the exhaust went through. Change the rear lights to the older style as seen on an M113 or M151A1 jeep. The front marker lights should also be replaced by the earlier style lights, same as the back lights. That is about it for external changes. The main change was the gasoline engine in the A1 was changed to a multi-fuel/diesel engine in the A2.

Here is a review article by Jim "Guntruck" Lewis that explains all the changes as well. M35A1 Guntruck, Nancy.

Thanks for the info Gino, seems like I remember seeing some sort of modification to front end I think it was the hood or something maybe it was a conversion from another kit to an A1. While Im talking about this what kits are there for Nam era trucks that can be converted.

The hood and front end mods are for the M54 5-ton which can also be made by converting/combining the AFV Club M35A2 and the Italeri M925 truck. There is a build article by Animal in the forum section that tells how to do this as well. M54 conversion.

As for models out there of Vietnam era softskins, there aren't many. The AFV Club M35A1 Nancy Guntruck comes with all the parts to make a standard M35A1. You could also get the AFV Club M35A2 and back date it as well. The only other Vietnam era truck out there is the old M34 by Revell. It needs lots of work to bring it up to a modern model's standards. It was made over 50 years ago, it was a great kit for its time, but needs a lot of work. Pedro just recently did an excellent job on one here as well. Pedro's M34

There is also the Academy M151A1 jeep kit too.

Also of note, the M35A2 was used in the later years of Vietnam as well, after about '68-'69. So it could be built straight from the box as well.

What Gino has said is true. the other thing that will have to be done is to the front marker lights and the rear tail lights to make a correct conversion. But in the latter 1968 to early 1969 we began to receive the A2's so depending on the year that you are trying to build will determine which lights. In some cases you would even see a mixture of the lights as we were able to get the parts to replace broken or damaged ones. The AFV Club kits are the only real 35 kit on the market and they are very close to be accurate. Have fun.

Animal, my man. That FL heat and sunshine must be getting to you. I didn't miss the lights. How could I miss the lights? :-)

From my original post.

Sorry about that Gino. But one thing the m 35 A1 were multi fuel engines and the M 35 were gas. I was half a sleep when I responded to the thread last night.. Thanks for catching it. I glad to see that our country is being defended by some sharp guys. LOL

Dave, no problem. I've been sleep-typing my self before. Thanks for the engine type correction too. Check out this M923 Guntruck over at Missing-Lynx as well.

Pascal can build some beautiful trucks. This example looks exactly like to the truck in Iraq. Right down to the rusted and unpainted armor.

Nope, not built by Pascal, do agree he does some nice ones though. It was built by a guy named Nick Allen. Pascal just replied to the post.
