I'm reasonably new to modelling, and I've only tried winter camo once, but I was happy with the results I got on this:

I spread a load of white enamel over the model, then quickly wiped off as much as I could with a tissue.

Hey Landon
think that you can't fault the use of artists' pastels for winter camo. As you state you are just getting started, this is a fool proof method, as the ground powder and water combo can be wiped off and reapplied to suit if it doesn't initially look right...Then seal it when you're done.
And just remember that it wasn't applied neatly in the field and they used whatever they could. ie. mops etc to slop it on...
Many pics I have seen show only the hull and turret to be whitewashed, and occasionally the bogies/wheels...
Hope this helps!
Brad
