Just wondering if the radio and mounting setup is accurate in the M16?
Did all M16s carry radios? I was thinking to possibly not install the radio, was wondering how exactly to do it.

If I don't install it, I was wondering if it would be correct to fill the locating hole in the fuel tank and shave off the locating tab on the cab bulkhead, or does the mount need to be installed, just no radio?
Hope this makes sense to everyone!

Taylor:

I think the radio was pretty standard for all M16s. All pics I have seen include them.

It was very important for anti-aircraft artillery to have good commo -- both to warn about incoming bad guys and to try to prevent shooting at good guys.

According the vehicle data sheets in R.P. Hunnicutts Half Track book, the M16 Halftrack had either a
SCR 510 or SCR 528 radio. There isn't any definitive statements in the book that states specifically that all half tracks had radios installed. I can say that almost all of the field photographs show vehicles with radio antennaes visible.

I think you can build it any way that you want and be ok. I would be surprised if anyone could could prove that every single M16 Half-Track that saw service had a radio mounted.

However, I would agree with Hollowpoints statement. These vehicles were important assets to field commanders and would likely have a radio for direct, quick communications as the tactical situation changed.

Basically, decide how you would be happiest building the kit and go for it.

Thanks to both of you! I think I will keep the radio.

Does the type of radio have anything to do with where/what type of antenna mount is used?

I have pics and the mounts seem to be all over the place and I dont really see anything that looks like the setup in the M16 kit, as far as the radio goes.

Sometimes, different radios have different antennaes. Sometimes, many types of radios use the same type of antennae.

An antennae for a specific radio type usually has a designated place for mounting on a specific model of vehicle.

You would have to do some research to verify antennae type and location if you are going to deviate from the kit instructions as far as placement location is concerned.

Thanks! I am already researching, but so far none of the pics I have found of radios in M16's look like the kit one. Most seem to be large radios and the antenna seems to usually be mounted to the top of the radio case. With the Tamiya setup that isnt possible.

The kit has no antenna mount at all, that is why I am in the dark. This is the first time I have had a visible radio in a build. Sounds like it might be time for another radio to be added to the build.

Verlinden makes a good radio set which would be appropriate it does have an antennae mount on the radio.

The Radio in the Tamyia M16 is a Korean War type, not a WW2 type. HTH.

Well, that makes sense. I found info on some radios and they are wayyyyyy larger than what it in the M16. Also, all the pics I have found showing a radio in the M16, are much larger also.
I havent found anything close to what Tamiya has included.

Hi here's aphoto I used to build an M16 for a campaign build here at Armorama.

It's an M16 in the Ardennes and there is a guy in front of the gun mount using what seems to be a radio telephone.
I actually built it with the kit radioinstalled and found not enough room for all the figures- even allowing for the fact that real bodies fit around things better than plastic.
Also there is no sign of an aerial.
Hope that helps,
MC
