WOW Scott,
this is an excellent review. I can feel your enthousiasm.
It appears to be an excellent set. I wouldn't have much use for it, since I don't model French scenes, but an awful lot of us do !! For them I think it's a great addition to their collection.... awsome potential in that set.
Again, an excellent review !! Thanks for sharing it sith us !

Danny - CD has other nationalities - I know they have a German 'flavor' too. Not 100% of other nationalities though.

Scott,
don't get me wrong... I think these sets are an excellent addition to their ever growing product range. The fact that I hardly ever build something that is situated in France doesn't mean that CD must obey my wishes. I feel that an awful lot of modelers find great use for these sets and that's what counts, not the individual like me. Therefore it's a good choice they made. As a matter of fact I highly appreciate companies like CD (and a lot of others) who have the gutts to invest in new hobby items in hard economical times. One time it's something that I can use very good and at other times a lot of other modelers are lucky

The set looks good, but there are a number of significant errors :
Commesteries is NOT a French word. It is not even close to any know French word related to foodstuff, including obscure ones. The only word that has a vague likeness with commesteries is comestibles (as in English).
Ricard is not suitable for a road street name or a road sign. Ricard is the best known brand of a popular aniseed aperitif called pastis. So, the Ricard sign is best used has an ad plate, especially on a café wall.
One potential problem is that CD used the same design for the Ricard sign and a sign sporting "St.Raphael". St-Raphaël is the name of a resort town on the French Riviera where some of Southern France landings took place (Operation Anvil-Dragoon, August 15, 1944). So be carefull when using those signs.
L'Hibou (The Owl) is not orthographically correct. As the starting 'H' of Hibou is not a 'mute H', you should write it 'Le Hibou'. It's a bit like in English, where the pronunciation of 'the' depends of whether it is before a consonant or a vowel.
As an final note, the blue street signs bearing on top of the street name a roundel with something like "1er arr.", "2ème arr." and so on, are only suitable for a Paris dio. Those roundels are used to indicate in which of the 20 Paris boroughs you are.

Fair enough.
I have to agree that the "Paris Street signs" could be specifically Parisian.
Not sure if some of it would be 'time specific' and changed over the years.
The other items I could honestly say are 'grammatical license' for signage.
