Mike, your map shows the positions of Units on D-day. The battles of St Lo took place at the END of the Normandy campaign, so most likely those units would be in different positions, sorry.

Panzer Lehr was the closest panzer div. to St. Lo during the fighting there. The few tanks they had left were Pz lV H,and Panther A's. Because of the defensive nature of the fighting in the hedgerows, most of the Panzer Grenadiers' halftracks were left in the rear areas and they fought dismounted. Hope this helps. The next closest panzer divs. were 2nd SS (Das Reich), and 17th SS (Gotz von Berlichingen). 2nd SS had the usual tanks including some early Panther G's, and 17th SS seems to be the only div. with photo documentation of being equipped with Stug lV's (along with Panthers and Pz lV's).

Good call Biggles, I'd agree with most of your comments, but I'd question whether Gotz v Berlichingen had Panthers, as a Panzergrenadier division their establishment was for a Stug Abteilung only, however I'm willing to be corrected. I note there's a new unit history of GvB out ATM. BTW, there's a photo of what appears to be a GvB Sdkfz221 in Bender & Taylor. As they were raised & equipped in France, I believe they had a lot of captured French based equipment also. Bender & Taylor mention that GvB had a constant struggle to get the equipment it needed.

Steve, you're probably right about 17th SS as I was only assuming they had Panthers and/or Pz lV's. But it's a good opportunity to use the Stug lV. Everybody's making them, but they were relatively rare. Most Stug Abt's were equipped with Stug lll's, but 17th SS is one of the few with positive documentation of having Stug lV's.
