Did the Germans use large barrels in the winter trenches of ww2???...were they like the US 205 L ones???

Yes. They were very similar in construction and close in size (I think the German barrels are slightly smaller). In 1/35th scale, unless you put the German ones next to the U.S. ones, they would be very difficult to tell apart. Paint and mark German and you should be OK. I'd paint them Panzer Grau or Dunkel Gelb.
