Apart from using Grief lenses, paint them a mid-grey, use some clear gloss on them and then brush some pastels over them...you'll be surprised how realistic this looks.

I use the same method as Vinnie's for small headlights and for the larger one I hollow out the headlamp and insert a cup-shaped aluminium foil and cover it with a piece of clear sprue (I'm a cheapo).

The smaller read indicator lights seen below uses the first method although I think I might have over smudged it. Several gloss coats over the base paint should give the illusion of depth. The second method was used for the big headlamps.

Like Vinnie, if I have to paint headlights, I usually start with a grey, and use a little white oil color, to gently lighten the centers to an almost white. (I use enamels, and oil colors work very well with enamels allowing plenty of time for blending) It's like painting a picture of a sphere. A couple of clear coats follow. And like Vinnie said, a little weathering, you'll be amazed with the results.
(My personal opinion: Sliver painted headlights on a vehicle, look as bad as bug eyes on a figure, and distract from the rest of the work.)
