Hello All:

My current project is a HEMTT fueler M978 of the 3rd ID in OIF. I was wondering if every one would have a radio, only some, or none. No radio comes w/ the kit or the AM Pro Art interior kit I am using. Now that I think of it, I have not noticed radio antennas on HEMTTs.

Thoughts?

Bob,
Depends on the type. I haven't seen many on fuelers, but our ammo HEMMTs in 1-39 all had radios. The radio was mounted on the center console facing the TC. Antenna mounted off the rear of the cab.

In the armor battalions and cavalry squadrons I served in, the M977 and M978 did not have radios, but the M984 wrecker did have a radio for dispatching it on recovery missions.

Seems like a good place to ask: To what extent did HEMMTs reach USAREUR before the cold war ended? I've seen some pics of them (either in the Concord REFORGER title or Skinner's USAREUR book--I don't remember which right now), but I get a sense that they were like Humvees, and generally only toward the late 80s. Also, did some variants appear signficantly before others?

Hey Bob, out of the 10 in my Battalion, none of them had radios.

When I arrived in Germany in late 1987, HEMTTs were already a common fixture in the maneuver battalions. Some units had HMMWVs before I arrived, our division received HMMWVs in early 1989.

I was in Germany from mid-85 to mid 87 - the Arty boys in Augsburg had HEMTT's before I left - I remember being quite impressed by them.

fuelers in first cav right now are not running radios, a few on convoys are carrying a dismount radio in a bag and using it, most of the guyss we escorted used motorola or ICOM radios
