Any tips on doing the coated optics used on today's AFVs (in particular an M2A2)? I'm toying with the idea of using some plastic metallic sequins I came across but it looks as though they will be a little too thick to just glue over the periscope. I've been searching the craft stores for some metallic foil in the right colors but haven't had much luck.
I know there was an article in FSM back in Dec of '04 but didn't save it.
Thanks.

My technique is to first paint them black. Next paint a thin coat of clear (stoplight) red over top. Finally, coat with a couple heavy layers of clear gloss. It gives the effect of anti-laser coating and varies from black, to red, to a purple, depending on the angle.

Thanks for the reply Gino (and for the reply to my other post). I've been quite impressed with your work. Never would have thought the multiple colors could be replicated with some paint and gloss.

Sherb, on a Bradley I recently finished, I painted the face of the lense a medium blue, and then cut a piece of overhead transparency film to fit. When glued over the painted surface the clear film provides a touch of the same light-refraction as you see in photos of the ral optics...

Hi,
On my M1A1 I used the iridescent stickers ( in this case stars) that kids get from the discount store, they change colours from different angles.
Check out discount stores ( In BC they call themselves "The Dollar Store" ) or art supply stores
Cheers

Hi
As you have seen there are a few ways of doing this. Some have successfully used sequins while others have tried the old gloss black with clear colour coatings. If you have access to either or, I would suggest you practice first to see what result pleases you the best.
