hi all. i was following the post "cav zimm" by popaddy in the forum, and FYI i never used zimmerit though i build mostly ww2 german afvs.

so, as a 'zimmerit newbie' i have a quick question for you AM experts:
-which is better, in terms of cost, finishing and appearance: resin or PE zimmerits?

thanks in advance.

Mojimbo,
i'm not AM expert either..
i never used any of AM zimmerit in my life..they're expensive here!! i use putty method with tamiya zimmerit tools...but i only did zimm on tiger ..i never try other pattern of zimmerit such as the waffle type..etc..etc
so, this method is cost effective.
my 0.2 cents

HI

I like Cavalier zimmerit. It is nice and thin and can be cut eaily to represent chipped or damaged sections.

I have heard a lot of good things about Atak but I find their prices to be a bit too high.

moJimbo -

Though not overly experienced with the Am zimmerit, I did use Cavalier's on my Dragon JagdPanther and was very pleased. Great detail and fit was a breeze (very minor trim needed in one spot). I've got a set now for my Tiger (Mid) and their "generic" sheet for a cut to fit possibility. I used a thin coat of 5 min exopy to apply it and had plenty of time to adjust. It stayed down great and had only a couple "bubbles" (more due to my inexperience) that were taken care using a pin. Cavalier makes about all the varieties of zim and all look great with cost quite reasonable. So I'll go along with Logan, though I also haven't tried Atak yet. Hope this helps,

I'll admit I've never used after-market zim of any kind, as I prefer to do my own. That said, I have examined examples of: Cavalier & Attak resin and Eduard PE. Of the three, the Eduard PE would definitely be my last choice for the simple reasons that it is too uniform (almost too perfect) and doesn't have the same depth of texture of the two resin offerings. In terms of choosing between Cavalier and Attak, I'd say you can't go wrong with either but of the sets I've inspected I liked the Attak stuff slightly better because many of the sets offer extras (like two cables in the Panther set). One tip I have seen repeated many times: Use epoxy glue as this will give you enough set-up time to ensure proper alignment of the pieces.
Again, take my opinion for what it's worth, as my experience is limited to examining the samples in their packaging.

The first time I used am zimmerit I used Eduard pe zimmerit on my DML Elefant and to be honest I wasn't too impressed, as Steve says above it's too uniform and I find it almost invisible from more than 2 feet away.
I then used Cavalier zimmerit on a Tamiya Tiger 1 late and was very pleased with the results so I'm going to continue with Cavalier.

I did purchase some Verlinden resin zimmerit for the Early Panther G by Tamiya and found that it was nowhere near as nice as the Cavalier product.

I have only used the Cavalier and I sing it's praises whenever a post about zimmerit shows up. The brass/metal stuff I would be concerned with because you bend it into shape and you could have some unwanted wrinkles or getting it to fit smoothly if you accidently crease it. The cavalier being paper thin resin is "floppy" like paper so it will form to the pieces you are gluing it to. I use the thick gel superglue as this gives me several seconds to adjust the piece into place and I don't have to mix a quantity of glue that might go to waste if something else comes up, or I don't plan to put more than one piece on kit.

I used Atak zimmerit on my Porsche King Tiger and was very impressed with it. Easy to fit with a little trimming required, used two-part epoxy to attach. Even came with a resin replacement turret, very nice indeed! Any joints were easily disguised with a little putty blended into the pattern on the resin sheets
