I own the "Sturmgeschutz & Its Variants" book. It is a great technical reference. It covers all variants and has great photos and line drawings. It doesn't have any color plates since it is more concerned with the technical aspects not the color or painting. I find it to be a great resource for detailing info. There are photos and drawings of the crew compartments, engine compartment, suspension, cooling system, well you get the idea. It even has a little section on zimmerit, what it is and how it was applied. But if you are looking for painting references you will be diappointed. It also has pics and info on StuG battalion support vehicles, like recovery vehicles, munitions supply vehicles, etc....

Achtung Panzer #5 is chock full of modelling detail info for the Sturmgeschutzen. It includes detailed drawings of the variatiions between the variants.

If you've never seen this series, you'll be pleasantly surprised. For the building side of modelling, they're unsurpassed.

Chad.
The "photo chronicle" book is so-so, in my opinion.
About 50/50 text and photos, including captions.
Basically a history of Stug development
As an adjunct to the Spielberger book and others,(Osprey, etc) it is worth it. As a primary information source, no.

I think they are good books, but IMO the best ROUNDED book is the Royton book. It has technical, unit, markings, detail, and color plates. Its not cheap, but a nice book.
