Another option you could do is the hot coal look (like what a BBQ looks like). Paint orange, red and yellow around the coals. Hope it helps .

Hi Karl,
I'm working on a fire in a oildrum right now. I used transparent (bathroom)silicone (you know the stuff to seal corners etc) I put a blob of the silicone-rubber on a card and then pulled up little 'flames'. I'm planning on putting a (yellow/orange coloured) light beneath it (still experimenting with this ).
I'll take a picture of it asap

I used cottonballs for my Burn Baby Burn. I suppose you could adapt it to an oil drum

Since you have a contained fire, with probably little smoke, what I'd do is get sone sort of semi-transparent material for flames, maybe the silicone mentioned above, and light it from below with yellow or white LED and maybe a flashing red one. If you can't find a yellow one, maybe paint the "flames" clear amber and just go with white and a flasher.

I took a quick pic of my attempt, I need a little brighter light I think, but you'll get the idea. I'm thinking of trying to add some smoke to make it a little more realistic.
