Hello all
I've not long seen the movie Kelly's Hero's (again)
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what Mk were the Tigers in the square ?
In the movie Donald Sutherland say's it's a Mk 6.
I'm thinking of doing a Dio and would just like to know which model to make.

Hope someone else watches this movie as much as me :-) and can help.

The "Tiger" they used was actualy a movie prop made from a T34, I think, chasis. I doubt it accurately represented any actual Tiger model. I understand there was a conversion kit out there somewhere that allowed you to recreate that tank, but I don't know for sure which one. I'll bet plenty of the people here can tell you about it.

He's right, the Tiger I is the PzKpfw Mk VI (6).

You probably know this already, but in Saving Private Ryan they used the same trick. Quite convincing, but you just can't hide the narrower tracks and different wheels and suspension.

Aside from that, the coupola is not for a late nor a mid-production. The road wheels and tracks as well as the fiefel air filters, they were not in use already....any way nobody's perfect :-) :-)

Only 2 breeds of people would have picked that up....ones that scrutinise scale models on a daily basis and of course...the germans themselves.

It's a peculiar error of continuity that the front view has the plywood vision slot, but side views show a realistic assembly. Or am I missing something?

Kelly's Hero's Tigers look reasonably good on the screen, but look a bit odd in the stills...

That one's from here...which has many, many more photos of Tigers in the movie...
http://www.salt6.com/tigers.htm

One of the main things I noticed was the general size. Those are some really big men, or they're standing next to a baby Tiger. That made me curious about how a T-34 would compare to a Tiger sizewise. Here's an overlay I did with drawings scaled to the same size...

Here's a drawing showing how the Tiger "skin" was made to fit over a T-34 for Saving Pvt. Ryan...

http://users.skynet.be/kilroy/ww2/html/saving3.htm

BTW, the first site I mentioned has a bunch of stills of the Shermans used in Kelly's Hero's...

http://www.salt6.com/shermans.htm

It also has a page detailing the Shermans and some modeling tips...
http://www.salt6.com/kelly_s_heroes.htm

Take care.

The still of 'Kelly's Heroes' Tiger 112 looks odd because the image is compressed. Take a look at the road wheels and turret escape hatch - they are vertical ovals. The compression is not obvious on the scenery or actors (although the lamp pole looks mighty skinny!), but it makes the tank look shorter and taller than it really is.

As some others have mentioned, the Tiger is PzKfw VI, German tanks were incorrectly referred to by the Allies as Mark III, IV etc, when they are of course different vehicles, the "mark" is the Ausfuhrung letter. Incidentally, although quite convincing at a glance, the Tigers would be wrong for Normandy anyway, they have the early "dustbin" cupola, Fiefel air cleaners, & incorrectly show the LAH skeleton key (the "Dietrich", German slang for picklock) on the turret. LAH did not operate Tigers in Normandy, they belonged to SS Schwerer Panzer Abt. 101, whose mark was crossed keys in a shield. But what the hell, at least they tried. I remember one old British war film where the German panzers were represented by Centurions, & there's an Italian version of El Alamein where they British attack with M113s!

Your right, at least they made an effort to show actual German tanks. Various movies, Battle of the Bulge for example, show the Germans using M3 halftracks and M60 Pattons. Quite a few people would notice that is wrong, but only someone who really knows what they're looking for would spot that the 'Tigers' are T34s.

Sadly, too many people take their understanding of history from war movies. On the other hand, as someone mentioned previously, the majority of cinema-goers wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a T-55 masquerading as a Tiger (or any variation you could think of) nor, in the final analysis, would they give a damn. Personally I have a lot more faith in Schiffer than Spielberg...Jim

Apropos of nothing, I've seen a "T34 Tiger" close up @ Beltring (I think it was one from Saving Private Ryan). When it first started up behind me, I looked round, caught a glimpse of that profile & thought "I'm not seeing this, it can't be real!" Of course I was right, it wasn't, but it still looks like a hell of a tank in the flesh!
