Hi all,
Some time ago I asked you which Abrams kit I should buy. Well, I bought one, the Tamiya OIF kit, which really is a great kit to build. I haven't encountered any problems yet, and I think it's gonna stay that way....
Well, enough talking for now, here are some pics:

Hey great start there Martin. Its definitely a great kit and like you mentioned, there are no problems with it all the way.
To be honest, i liked building it so much, i might actually build the same one again. The one i built was done entirely with a paint brush as i hadnt got my airbrush then plus i got the colour a tad dark. Check it out.
Do post more photos as you progress.
Enjoy!

Martin...
What are your thoughts of the tamiya kit so far...reason being, I built Academy Models version a few months ago and found a few problems and innaccuracies with the final subject...what do you think about this one? I myself am not a big modeler of modern armor, (although they are beautiful machines!), but recently have been delving a bit on the modern side myself...

Well, I can't tell you anything about the accuracy....I hardly ever do research on this when I build a model.
What I can tell is that is really a dream kit to build:
- The parts fit very well (if not perfectly) so far
- The detail on for instance the upper hull is awesome. When you open the box and take a first look at the parts, the detail on the upper hull is really an eye-catcher!
- The kit is easy and real fun to build, instructions are logical and easy to understand.
- The kit provides you with 2 crew figs + stowage for the tank, you really don't need any aftermarket stuff, the kit provides you with all you need.
- Nice decal sheet with options for 5 tanks (3 desert, 3 nato-scheme)
I personally don't like the Modern theme that much, and I'm building this kit for a friend, but the quality of this kit makes it a joy to build!
Can't wait to start painting and weathering (preshading!! :-))

Tamiya's is the best currently on the market. It is almost a totally new tooled kit. The Academy one is probablt the worst, mainly for its inaccuracies and weak details. It is a rework of the old Academy M1A1, which was a mediocre copy of the old Tamiya M1A1. The major problem with the Academy kit is that the turret is 5mm short on the front slope. The turret is the same innacurate one from their old M1A1 kit, which was a recycled M1 turret without the added extra front armor of the M1A1.
Here are reviews on each. Academy M1A1 OIF
Tamiya M1A1/A2 OIF

I took a peek inside the new Academy kit and it is basically unchanged from their old M1A1 with some neat bits tossed in.Martin...

The retooled Tamiya M1A1/A2 has a lot of new features, new turret, new tracks and current OIF fittings tossed in

I built the Tammy M1A2 also. Hasn't everyone? About the only drawback is the lack of the anit-slip coating.

Hey
Got any pics which show where the anti-slip coating is applied?

I added this to the other post as well, but here is a good drawing showing where the anti-slip is applied on an M1A1/A2 Abrams.
Good luck.

And do all tanks have this feature or isn't it "needed" to build an accurate tank?

Most modern AFVs have anti-slip coating on flat, upper hull and turret surfaces. It is up to you to decide if you want to add it to your model. It will look fine without it, but be more accurate and realistic if you do add it. It is really a simple process, not hard to do at all. The results are great as well.

I still consider this "drawback" to be along the lines of complaining about the new Tiger kits because no zimmerit texture is pre-engraved.I built the Tammy M1A2 also. Hasn't everyone? About the only drawback is the lack of the anit-slip coating.
