Hey Guys,
I am planning a dio on some us marines walking away after having their jeep crashed into a tree somewhere in a vietnam jungle (don't have an exact location in mind yet)
But I was wondering what kind of jeeps where used in vietnam and what kind of jeeps you would find in the middle of the jungle (the good old willy? Or maybe there even where no jeeps there ???)
It won't have to be a superb model because it's going to be crashed into a tree
Thanks!
Koen

I don't think you will find any jeeps in the middle of the Jungle. But the Marines used the M-38 A1's in the early part of the war and ended up with the M 151 A1 and A2's. Their jeeps had the high water fording attachments installed. They also used the little mules a lot. You would see these little vehicles in the jungles around their fire base and arty support bases.

Ok, so there goes my plan
Well maybe I go with an ordinary road crash. Like a small road trough the jungle, that would be possible I guess. But what could they have crashed into ???

Water buffalo, dog, native cart that didn't move out of the way, fallen tree/log, another vehicle, land mine, ambush, the possibilities are endless. Just think of what might have been on a road that one can crash into or crash by trying to avoid it.

Well a tree was actually my first plan. But it wouldn't testify of any good driving skills if they just parked their jeep into a tree on the side of the road. Although maybe it would be fun

Damn where is my imagination (is that spelled ok... ) when I need it. Thanks, as you say the possibilities seem to be endless

Hi Elvis
Sorry if my last posting was a bit "ironic"
A tree is actually not a bad idea. Driving on a wet and slippery dirt road often ends in the ditch (or in a tree). Most soldiers will probably have this experience during their service. Driving in the dark without lights, trying to avoid enemy fire, beeing on roads not suited for vehicles or just bad luck are reasons for driving of the road. I think most of the soldiers on this site has stories to tell about small road traffic accidents ( I have some for sure).
Cheers
Erik

Hey Erik67, don't bother! I didn't get it as ironic. Maybe the question was a bit unnesecary. But I think I have some nice ideas now. Thanks!

Remember, no seat belts, so you don't want the crash too heavy or you have no one wallking away.

Instead of just a head on crash, maybe you could have it stuck in mud, or just a small careen (sp?) off of the road.

During the rainy seasons we would slide of the small muddy roars all the time. There was always a ditch on both sides of the narrow road. Trying to pass a water buffalo cart would have a newbe on the side of the road and into a ditch all the time.

Hey, Koen. I think a crash caused by any sort of animal or civilian (or both) would be hilarious if you can get some authentic animal 'figs'.
Here in SL, driving's always a bit like playing a PS2 game coz I'm always dodging cows, dogs, cats, chickens, cyclists and drunken pedestrians, and I'm betting Vietnam might've been similar. You have the potential for a really funny dio here.

I smell some crazy ideas here, thanks guys!!
I think I go with the muddy road, combined with a vietcong ambush (since one of the marines is walking in defense with a mg)
The scene will be like this:
Jeep drives on a muddy raod. Comes across an ambush. They want to drive by the ambush, come into a slip and end up in the ditch. After that they come crawling out and run into the bushes on the side of the road.
Sounds like fun to me

Perhaps a broken down jeep or a flat tyre may be a nicer Dio?
Creating a flat tyre wouldnt be too difficult. One way that i have seen worked very well is heating the wheel on a slow fire on your kitchen stove. Shape it the way you want once its soft. Its a delicate process but you get awesome results.

A flat tyre will sure be an aspect of this dio, but I want it to be a bit more drastic. Thanks though for the idea and the 'making a flat tyre solution'
