I've never used artists oils for modelling before (winsor and newton) and I am dipping my toe into the pool of figure painting...
I found a great site for face painting my Mark Bannerman.

Can the afore mentioned paints be thinned with white spirit or do you have to use something else?
Mnay thanks,

What kind of Winsor & Newton's did you get? They make an artist's quality line that can be thinned with water and the brushes can be cleaned with the addition of a little soap.

Hi Edge,
If you're using the usual W&N oil paints then white spirits should be fine. I don't know how they smell but if they smell strong, consider using turpenoid. It's an oderless thinner.
As Folgore mentioned, W&N also make a water soluable oil paint. I have no experience with this so I can't help you out there.
Here is a link to a page describing all types of thinners.

Hope you enjoy using the oils!

Be careful if you decide to go the tupenoid route, and not get a product called turpenoid natural. It is not the same as turpenoid. I found this out the hard way, i have a wash on a tank that is still sticky after two months! Regular turpenoid seems to work ok though.

Bribo,
Thanks for the warning about turpenoid natural. I've never heard of the stuff before. What I use actually doesn't say turpenoid on the label, just "odorless thinner". I wish I could remember the brand name but I can't. It's in a white metal bottle with a black & white picture of the Mona Lisa on it.
Thanks again,
Edge

The W&N paints I have are the 'Winton Oil Colour' and 'Artists oil Colour' ranges.
The reason I asked is because I tried to do a wash to a figure but the wash took on a kind of crazed effect. I followed the instructions from the web page in mentioned earlier rigidly.
However since posting the original question, I have tried again with better effect.
It's the ol' trial and error thing I guess. Lots of trial and even more error!!!
Thanks for the help yet again guys...

Be careful Ronny. Zippo fuel isn't the best thing if you wanna stay healthy. Look after very good ventilation.
