Folks
I've just picked up the Verlinden Panzer IV Bergepanzer conversion at a show. All it says on the package is "For Italeri Panzer IV". Could anyone please tell me what model hull it should be on?

Peter,
I have the kit also. The box says it's for the Italeri Panzer IV, which I cannot fine. My plan is to use the Tamiya IV Ausf.D. The Encyclopedia of German Tanks of WW II does not specify an Aufs. It does, however, say a box was built to replace the turret. The Verlinden kit I have has a round wooden cover for the turret opening and a jib crane.

Thanks Chuck it looks like we both have the same references lol. I'm beginning to wonder if this kit (#927) is for one of the earliest Bergepanzer IV's something similar to the Icm Bergepanther.

The latest release from Matador Models, Kit code KCG-17, is a conversion to build a Bergepanzer IV. It is designed for the Airfx PzKpfw IV F. It comes with a derrick which may be mounted in 3 positions erect, or stowed for travel, and the supply of tools and equipment which typically festoon all engineer vehicles in the field. The German army was slow to build specialised recovery vehicles on the chassis of their tanks. Until 1943 the huge 18ton half tracks were seen as sufficient.

It was the advent of the Panther which forced the issue, and the success of the Bergepanther, which was used to recover all tank types, led to the development of the Bergepanzer IV, using vehicles returning for repair. This was a very late- war conversion, built onto vehicles that had come back for repair. Only 21 were recorded as delivered to Wehrmacht units by the end of the war. This, the first design, mounted a 2 ton derrick, and pulleys for towing, but no winch
