I'm building the Italeri Ausf A and have a few questions. In FSM there's a review of the Dragon Ausf A kit. The kit has a letter box hull machine gun opening, binocular telescope apretures on the mantle and single exhaust pipes (no additional breather pipes on the left set of pipes). The hull gunners position has 2 periscopes. The Italeri kit has the hemispheric dome gun port, monocular telescope apreture, additional exhaust pipes and 1 periscope on the gunners side.
In a earlier FSM the ausf A is described as having all the attrbutes of the Italeri kit but no mention about periscopes or sight apretures.
Which kit is correct or are they both? #:-)

I think the late "A" does not feature the letter box MG opening, right? Guys.

I was reading that this kit is actually a late D of early A that was incorrectly named by Italeri as an Ausf. A. This explains the letterbox MG port .
Hope this helps,
Andrew

Guys,

Ausf D had vertical letter box hull MG, dustbin lid style cupola, horizontal sides with flat plates near the rear.

Ausf A had the Kugelbelnd Hull MG, new cupola with seven vision ports, horizontal sides with flat plates near the rear.

Ausf G had the Kugelblend Hull MG, new cupola with seven vision ports, no hull vision port for driver in the front plaate (he used a moveable periscope) some G's had a 'chin' on the bottom of the main gun mantlet and angled sides in a slope from front to rear which changed all the angles on the main hull from 45 degrees to about 37 degrees (used to ease production of jagdpanther)

The top of the rear hull and back plate seem to differ a lot as well for different versions.

As for exhausts, the pipes seem to differ quite considerably.

Two pipes for Aust D, A & G
One pipe and one pipe with extra small side pipes D & A
Two great big pipes with what look like fans in the top were used on G

If there is anyone else out there who can explain in more detail please update this topic

cheers chaps

Hey there,

The DML Kit represents this Early A model and this is the first kit of that Panther in plastic.

Many of the books out there misidentify all Letter box Panthers as D models. The Early D is identified using the "Drum Cupola" as the distinguishing characteristic. The Late D is identified using the letter box machine gun port and the later style commander's cupola.

Jentz and Doyle showed that we've just gotten it wrong all these years. Jentz "cleared" this issue up in his book, "Panther: The Quest for German Supremacy".
Using original production records and other data he "proved" that there was in fact an entire Early A model Panther that had the Letter box machine gun port and the later model turret. So, build your kit as a true "Panther A, Late" and be happy.

As an aside, DML has just release the Panther A, Late. And I have to say it's all of these Panthers from DML are very, very nice to build.

Let me know if you want more info about this topic.
Thanks,
TIm
