Has anyone thought of a "time efficient" way to paint the rubber pads on modern AFV tracks??

Once when I was in a hurry to finish a project, I painted the track a rust color, then rubbed the painted track on a piece of sandpaper. Not only did it take the paint off of the rubber pads-it also dulled them and gave them a realistic scratched appearance.
It even removed the slight sinkmarks most of the pads had.

I think it's best to paint the whole thing black first. Since we usually undercoat metal parts with black, then you have a headstart on the metal parts too.
Next paint the metal parts your favorite metal color (I mix umber oil paint and silver rubb and buff) by lightly painting over the black.
Then drybrush the black rubber parts with a grey color to show their wear.
That's a start, before any heavy weathering begins, depending on the environment.
