Appently, its at Meppan. Locals got annoyed with the constant test firing, so the germans made that...THING...

hang on...for a suppressor to work....you'd have to have a seal around the barrel hey?

LOL!!!...are you sure you havent got something that you souldnt have???...LOL!!!

I have no idea what it is!...but if that supporting structure wasnt there it looks like the artilery would just tip!...

But look at the seal between the barrel and the big thing...once the shot has been fired would the recoil (if its that large) change the position of the barrel or a second??? is the posibility that the barrel could hit the large thing???

From where did you get this pic from???

They've taken the usual shrink's idea that guns are just phallic symbols to a whole new level haven't they ?
You can just picture the guy sitting at his computer designing the thing laughing away to himself ...........
On the subject of how effective it would be, the expansion chambers would deaden the sound of the propellant charge ( a tight seal wouldn't be that important as long as the barrel was far enough in to make sure all gass expanded into the chamber ), but the sonic boom of the projectile would still annoy the neighbours you'd think..... :-)

Unless they used a subsonic round.

I got that from the russianfront forums. www.russianfront.net a mod for Half Life.
Could you use a sub sonic round for that?

And the gunner gets to say, each time he fires, "Mine's WAY bigger then yours!"

Thank God for Photoshop!

I think that the seal around the barrel is of a rubber type membrane and thus would allow the barrel some movement, thus having little to no effect on the targetting or re-setting of the barrel to it's original postition. So I do not think that it could ever hit the supressor/silencer what ever it is..........I can't imagine the superiority of German engineering would allow such a mistake.......lol

I'm afraid I don't have answers just the ability to dispel theories.
The principle of a silencer works this:-
The length of barrel that is encompassed by the silencer sleeve has gas vents drilled in it to allow the propellant gas to escape. This means some of the rounds energy is lost and it leaves the barrel at less than the speed of sound so there is no sonic boom.

I have fired weapons on a pipe range and this doesn't reduce the noise just makes it a higher pitch and has echoes as well.
So I shall leave you with this
WHAT THE HELL IS IT?

Shout out to Desert-Fox

The membrain idea is smart but it is an anumption...you are right...it would give it some room for moovement.

The seal looks like it is just a bit bigger than the barrel if it's that exact then I dont think there would be any space for the mebrain.

PERHAPS THIS THING IS NOT A SILENCER???....MABY ITS SOMETHING THAT MESURES THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTILE!!! See the little round things on the sides???...perhaps there are some kind of sensors to see how fast or how far the projectile can be sent???...Just an idea

I gotta go with gatekeeper on this one. It looks like it is a permenant installation, what with all the girders holding it up and all.

Not too damn useful to have to go around building emplacements for your silent mobile artillery!

My first thought, ok after all the phallic imagery.., was some sort of ballistics measuring chamber or super high speed photography set-up.

I'd be very interested to hear what it really is.

in the bottom left of the picture it says "Courtesy: pahlkötter" so i did a search for "pahlkötter" and found he's the author of a book about modern armor? i don't speak German so I'm not sure what the title says, buts here's a picture of his book, I'd bet thats where the picture came from.
