Some years back a company by the name of KMC produced a conversion for Italeri's 105mm howitzer converting it to the 3" U.S. AT gun.
M5. M5's had the same splinter shield as the l05. However prior to D-Day all towed units going to Europe were switched the the M-6 version. Same gun, different shield.
You're right, the gun never changed (always the M5) but there was no overall system designation or component model number that went from M5 to M6 on this item. The original item was composed of a Gun, 3-inch, M5; a Carriage, 3-inch gun, M1; and a Recoil Mechanism, 3-inch gun, M9. The carriage and shield were not exactly like that on the Carriage, 105mm howitzer, M2/M2A1, but close. The carriage with the new angled shield was the M6, but the gun was still the M5 and the recoil mech. the M9 or M9A1.
The confusion results from model companies and authors who can't get a handle on how nomenclature systems work.
