Well, I finally landed a copy of Hunnicutt's Abrams book today - which also covers the development of the MBT-70. After glancing through a couple of times, I cannot see anywhere it describes some of the "boxes" I've seen on the MBT-70 at Aberdeen. In some cases, there were weights added to the different pilot vehicles to simulate full loads and such, but nothing that looks like the one displayed at Aberdeen. I thought that they might be storage boxes or something - but doesn't look like they open in any way. Anyone know what these are?
From Aberdeen:
and from Fort Knox (without boxes):
I think these are just the coolest looking tanks there are - sure wish someone would make a kit of these in 1:35 (plastic, resin or whatever)!
Thanks

Those appear to be weights as well. The Crusader at FT. Sill is covered with them too.

It is indeed a fascinating tank!
A nice kit in 1/35 would be very welcome.
I recently finished "accurizing" Aurora's old 1/48 kit, depicting the first MBT70 prototype as it appeared at rollout:
No weights (or much of any other equipment) on at rollout.
Our own Sabot helped me out a lot with this project.
Thanks, Rob!

Accurate Armour has an M103A2 listed as one of their upcoming releases. Not sure when it is due out though. It will be a Marine Corps version - I would prefer an Army version but will get one of these if ther is nothing else.
Wonder if they would consider an MBT-70? I might ask them...
