I've recently came across a few pics showing Marines M1A1 in Iraq with a M240 MG on a "scissor" mount (like the one used on the LAV) on the turret top, in place of the usual loader MG mount. Is it a recent (field ?) modification or would it be possible to find such a mod during OIF early stages ?
Here's a link to a picture showing what I'm talking about ( a BIG picture...):

Hi Frenchy,
really nice pic. Some interesting features to keep in mind such as the hollow track guides on the spare links.
It's a good example of weathering too.
To go back to your question, I reaalyy don't know if in OIF1 there was such MG mounts. All the pics I have seen show the standard mount.
Maybe Tankleader could tell us more being the Marine tank specialist.
Maybe this mount is the one missing in the Trumpeter LAV kit :-) :-)

These type mounts started being added recently, along with the infantry version, with full grips and buttstock, of the M240B. They are not a new fielding, but just some inventive crews. It is the same mount as on the LAV. Not sure when they started adding them, but they were not present in OIF 1.

Thanks a lot Gino !
I must say I prefer the look of this mount to the usual one...

Hello All,
These are going to be standard to all Marine Tanks. Initially it started out as a field test, but the crews liked them so they were procured for the Tanks in Iraq and are now going to retrofitted to all of the tanks. There are other mods out there as well which will be incorporated into the TUSK upgrade.

So Whats a TUSK Upgrade, and why would this gun be better then the other on that is currently Mounted on this one, and how could one put one on their M1A1HC OIF? Also would it not gunk up things in the inside of the turret with all of the spent casing falling back into the turret, or do this thing kick the spent shells further away?

TUSK stands for Tank Urban Survival Kit. Do a search, someone has posted the link and pictures from the Army's website. Some of the modifications will be slightly different from Marine Tanks.

TUSK (Tank Urban Survival Kit) is an experimental upgrade fro the M1. It has added items to make it more survivable in urban warfare. The gun is the same as a standard loader's M240B, with the full grips and buttstock added. The mount is more flexible and allows the gun to be moved more quickly and in more directions/angles. I haven't seen the gun mount up close, but assume there is a bag or box that collects the spent brass.
TUSK
To model the mount, you would either have to find someone who does one in resin, or scratch the mount. The gun can be found in DMLs Modern MG set.

the tusk system is supposed to add the big boxy bradley type armor to the sides of the skirts,(making the tank too wide for baghdad, and all the little hell holes there) an upgraded commanders .50cal station with thermal sights firable with the hatch closed, and a new loaders shield, oh and the "diaper" on the back of the tank, the big RPG grate covering the rear of the tank, and about the 240's being mounted like that it so our loaders can get the gun up and over the CITV, and also down along the sides of the tank better, some crew use just the front pin on the mount, and lock the mount in max elevate, and put the stock and pistol grip on the 240, its alot better as far as targeting, and flexibility. beautiful pictures and reply GINO!!!!!!!!!!!hooah

Hello All,
The Marine Corps is actually in the process of getting .50 cal thermal sights as part of the commanders weapon station. This sight will replace the current commanders .50 cal sight at his station. Then there is the loaders 240 station mentioned above as well as some other changes.

Greetings fellows,
As some of you guys already know, I'm working on producing AM upgrades-starting particulary to the M1 Abrams in OIF. Should come to light mid year..better late than never.
Can you guys shed some light on these varieties well as modifications seen on the loader's weapon system of the Abrams?
3 so far ...Are there more...? But can't confirm of details..for example,.when they used the M240 with hand guard..some remove the fore sight and carrying handle, but do they remove the weapon's (wooden?) butt..? Can someone add more info to this as well as throw in some pictures to these or any I've not mentioned? I need details guys, I'd like to add variety to the AM offering. I
1--A scissor type mount. like in the link above.
2--M240 with added hand guard to the barrel, making it part of the loader's dismount kit. (or is it an M240 modified and used replace the "stock weapon"?)
3-- Gun shield added, as seen in concord book. But can't make out which weapon used..
MANY MANY THANKS!
Nick

Mouse House has this mount. It's called a Platt mount.

The Platt mount was used in OIF1 on the Abrams. The HCM book Vehicles of The USMC shows it on page130. Unfortunately, it is a copyrighted pic so I can't post it. But I have 2 extra copies if anyone is interested in the book...

Frecnhy,
I was there in Fallujah at the time but without my tank, I was an advisor to the Iraqi Army. Anyway, that was a "Ghetto Mod" done by the Marines to try and improve the loader'a ability to use his weapons. These mounts were taken off of damaged vehicles and then added to the tanks. Take a look at the race ring for the mount, you can see how they bent the attachment points to make them fit. This has turned into an officail mod, but with a better design for the mounting point.

Then it's a miscaptioned pic, like that never happens.. Plat mounts didn't start showing up till a couple yeras ago, as stated above.
It could well be miscaptioned, but the book was published in '05. More than a couple of years eh?...

From the pic I didn't think it looked "official". As you said, moreso "ghetto mod".
This is the only pic I ever saw of this (other than the one Frenchy posted) and didn't even
know they existed otherwise. Cool mod though. I was gonna use that pic as a basis for a future dio.
Aside from being an official item after Fallujah, was this format used any earlier?
Alot of pics don't have date placements.
