Hi guys,
I have been looking to improve my reference collection and am looking for some good books on the PZ IV.
I have to pretty much buy online so I don't want to waste my money on something thats a waste of my time. I see squadron has a few different ones but I would like some first hand info.
Any comments or advice would be great.
BTW....
I have the Squadron in Action book.
Thanks

HI, A somewhat old edition by now is put out by Squadron/Signal. Armor No. 12 called "The PzKpfw IV in Action". Lots of good pictures and some line drawings showing a lot of the various differences on this vehicle during it's production. This is an oldie, but a goodie to me.
Another older book is the No 1 series of Achtung Panzer. Mostly in Japanese and it's mainly a modeler's reference book, but is absolutely great as far as showing details of the various items that this vehicle had on it during it's history.
There are several books out by Concord Publications in their "Armor at War" series that is just jammed-packed with excellent combat photos of the Panzer IV. Of course it's not totally of of Panzer IV, but since this vehicle soldiered all throughout the conflict, there are some really good shots scattered throughout some of these various books.
You might also check into RZM Imports, as they have quite a few good reference books as well. They aren't cheap, but then what is these days.
Hope this helps somewhat.
Good luck and take care, Sgirty

"Tanks in Detail" have a book on the panzer IV. I like this series of books as they are well written and reading is easy. Lots of good pics and info.

Like others have said, the 'in action' book by squadron is good and an even better one is the newer Panzer IV special which came out about two years ago. It all depends on your perspective. I tend to buy books which emphasize in action shots but I have several more technical and more modelling oriented books as well

Tanks in detail is a very nice book, full of worthwile info, with some good pictures. The Photo's are mainly reference photo's, if you are looking for plenty action shots this might dissapoint. It won't dissapoint in knowledge, and it reads easy aswel. All the differences/upgrades of all the variants are discussed.
I bought Achtung Panzer Vol. I earlier this week, and would highly recommend it. Crammed with photo's in action and in detail, All the photo's are captioned in English aswel as Japanese. The main tekst is in Japanese only, but as this is mainly a Photo book that's not a great problem.
Both the books deal with the Pzr IV only, not with any of the derivatives such as StuG IV, Nasshorn etc.
Cheers
Henk

I'll put in a shout for the Achtung Panzer volume as well.
Not speaking Japanese has not been a barrier to me using these books for my building needs.
Great line drawings and timelines for variants and variations. Great detail drawings and pictures of the AAmg mount as well.
My US$0.02, your mileage may vary.

Henk is correct, ‘Tanks in detail’ is a good reference book.
Personally, I believe 'Panzer IV & Its Variants' by Walter J.Spielberger is an excellent book, comprising a vast amount of data, and at about the same price.

I'll chime in for the Actung Panzer series as well but Go with volume 3 which they redid on the Panzer IV because of a few mistakes made in volume I..

Thats definitely one of the best books about the Panzer IV if you want to learn about the different versions and technical details, for fotos you better choose something like the squadron "in action" series
