Thinking about building this one as a practice tank for learning zimmerit (I did a Brumbar recently for the same reason). Main reason I say practice is due to the superior Dragon kit being out there I expect eventually I will build that.

My question is simple. When adding zimmerit do you find it easier to add it to the parts before assembly or after? I did it after on the Brumbar and I think that was the wrong approach. Thinking before to allow me easier access and control.

Part 2 is tape the way to go to keep the zimmerit off the parts where you don't want it?

Thanks in advance.

I did the old Tamiya Tiger 1 late recently to practice before I started on the new Dragon kit, too. I did use tape to mask off the fender line when I did the zimmerit. (I used DAP vinyl spackle) It worked fine for a long straight line. I don't know how tape would work in other areas.

Shaun

Oh, I have always done the zimmerit after the whole model was assembled.

Thanks for the feedback Shaun I found it to go ok when I did the Brumbar other than I wasn't very satisfied with my ability to get the lines reasonably straight (looked like a drunk work crew did the job).

Time to give the Tiger a try while I research my M4A2 project.

I am building the Dragon 3 in 1 kit and have looked around the 'net for photos regarding zimmerit. Many seem to have none at all.
Can anyone give me an idea as to when zimmerit was applied? Was it on all Tiger 1 tanks. Looking around it seems not.
The model I am building is the command tank from the kit.
Many thanks.
Tony.

Just for your info, Tony.

Vodnik placed a posting earlier on that ATAK is about to release a set of Zimmerit for the DML Tiger I late 3 in 1.
I worked with ATAK sets before, and I can say it is worth every penny!!

Just my two cents...euhhh penny!!

All late Tiger 1's will have zimmeit. Most of the photos you are lookig at must be the early versions (as the mids and lates were pretty much all zimmerited. If you are going to putty your zimerit, get either the stamping tools or one of those scrappers. I don't build the whole kit, but I assembly sections (like the turret) and apply it

There are some you forgot to include:
1) Liquid Nails
2) Tissue paper(?)

I've seen pics and write-ups about those two above. Based on the pics I saw they look decent enough, but I'm not sure about the lasting effect and the ease of use. I myself is an advocate of the Elmer's wood putty and Tamiya putt, but I mostly use the wood putty.

Cheers

I've used the Squadron white putty whenever I've done it by this method. Once I discovered the Cavalier paper thin resin though, that was the end of that discussion. Waiting for them to come out with their Dragon late Tiger sheet. Though they have one for the Tamiya and AFV versions there might be some differences

Used Etch zimmerit on my king tiger its OK.. Cavalier on my Elefant and that looks very nice. Rolled my own on the Brumbar not so good but its a first try. Going to roll my own on the Tamiya kit but I will drop the cash for the Atak stuff on the DML I am sure.

I use R&J putty which has a good setup time and can be worked with water as a solvent ie dip the tools in water. I like it alot. Thinking this time I am going to try making a stamp.

I am experimenting Tamiya's Tiger I Zimmerit sheet with a Dragon Tiger I.
It is not perfect but the result is reasonable. You will need to be careful with the corners and may need to super glue some of them to get better adhesion.
