Figured I would ask here before tacking the project.

1) How different are the interiors of the M113A1 and M113A2? Reason I ask is that I have the interior from the Academy M113A1 kit, and I want to drop it into my Tamiya M113A2 kit.

2) What would be a good OOB (out of the bottle) match to the interior color of a US based M113A2? Academy simply calls out for "Light Interior". I use acylics only BTW.

Thanks in advance.

No major differance between an M113A1 and and A2. A1 had a smaller fuel tank (as in the Tamiya kit), A2 has the longer tank depicted by Academy. The Academy M113A1 and A2 interiors are actually the same one, just drop it in place.

The interior color is called Seafoam Green. Testors MM Pale Green, with a little white is pretty close. Also, Tamiya has a color called Sky that is close, but I haven't used it before.

Just a reminder, but the box art of the Tamiya kit represents a US M113A3 and not an M113A2. The interior that goes with the exterior artwork has many more differences than that of an M113A1 or M113A2.

My motor pool link below will take you to my album where interior shots of an M113A3 are.

Thanks Gino and Rob. Looks like I'm OK, as I am defintiely building an A2, based on the pics in Rob's side-by-side comparison.

Oddly enough Rob, that's one of the reasons the PE set is heading your way.....

Thanks for the PE set, hasn't arrived but I'll let you know when it does.

Tamiya sort of went on the cheap when they made this kit. It is an M113A2―, meaning that it is their old M113A1 kit with some parts added to make it look cosmetically like an M113A3. Close, but not quite there.

Question, the Academy M113A1 ACAV has the same fuel tank that the one in the M113A2, same brand. ŋitīs accurate or not? Thatīs because I thaught that the fuel tank of Tamiya M113 is the one for the gas engine of initial models, is this correct or Iīm completely wrong? Who knows :-) :-)
Thanks and cheers

You are partially right. The tank in Tamiya kit is of welded type, as used in gasoline M113 and early diesel M113A1. Later M113A1 had larger removable tank and older A1s were also modified and had these safer tanks installed. The tanks in Academy kits are significantly too long (should be only slightly longer than the tank in Tamiya M113 kit), but they have correct details for removable tank as installed in late M113A1 and all M113A2.

Well, the M113A3 would not have an interior fuel tank. If you have the Academy fuel tank, it should not be that difficult to cut out a portion of the Academy fuel tank so it is the proper size.

Mouse Armour has released a corrected LateA1/A2 fuel tank :

It's available here :

But I agree with Rob about "the scratchbuilding option"

If the top one's the Academy part and the bottom one the resin replacement, then I do not think it would be difficult to fix.

i'm finally gettin started on my 11th acr platoon . i have 6 weeks off due to abdominal surgery, so will be working on that.

i have 2 of the italeri 113a1's, the academy 113a1, vietnam version, and the academy 113a2 to build.
so it will be a fulfilling time off. i bought the tamiya sky green color for the interior color.

point is i will probably be refering back to this thread for assistance as needed, memory goes a long way, but will need the aide i know.

great walkarounds rob.

thanks in advance,
reb
