Your attention please. The site will be going down in about an hour (3:00PM EST/12:00PM PST/19:00 UTC/GMT).

I would estimate it will be down a few hours at least while the file transfer takes place. I could leave up the existing site but then all the activity added after the database/file archives would be lost. So err.... go build a model or something!

Wish me luck!

Thanks,
Jim

Ack....okay that was a total bust. It's harder than I thought to transfer 15gb server to server. Back to the drawing board. I may need to try to setup a mirroring system. That may work.

Are they both remote servers or you have access to both them physically?

If you have physical access to them, you may find either a tape drive more or a portal HDD to your liking. 15GB of data over USB2 will certainly be done in an hour.

If its remote, request your ISP to see if they can provide a USB2 link between the two servers as oppose to the usual CAT5 cables.

From our last thread on this, your main worry was the gallery. Your best bet here is definitely to do the migration in stages....migrate the main site over to the new server and pick another night to migrate the gallery (only the gallery is inactive while this occurs). This at least reduces the amount of traffic flowing across in a single night. Im guessing your site and gallery are stored on seperate databases anyway which makes it easier for you. This would be the way i would do it if Cat 5 cables are the only option for me.

Creating a mirror server still leaves you with the problem of data consistency..with the mirror being slightly behind the live server unless you can alter the upload function to duplicate the file on both servers therefore only having to worry about the historical data to migrate over.

Just thought i would bounce some ideas off you.
