Hi all

I'm presently halfway through building Italeri's M4A1(76)w Sherman, my first non-DML armour build. I have to say I am really enjoying putting it together and using techniques suggested to me after showing my T34 (thinned fenders for denting etc).

What I'm planning to do is take a plunge and scratchbuild some details into the interior. I have found good reference for the drivers area (don't have a CLUE how I'm going to even roughly model the transmission) but I just can't find any pictures of inside the turret.

So please, can anyone point me in the direction of some decent m4a1 turret interior photos ? something showing at least what the seat looked like, what was around and about etc. would be excellent.

Thanks for reading
Jon

Squadron/signal Walkaround Sherman is great too..
There are a couple of corrections needed with that kit which are explained here http://www.usarmymodels.com/MANUFACTURERS/Italeri/italeri225.html
Here's a shot of mine in progress

hi, and thanks. I am not going to be scratch building a full interior, just enough to suggest there is one

nice job with your sherman. I am stuck using the viny tracks I just can't afford to go out buying fruils etc. Luckily the sherman is a bit of a mish-mash so many different configurations were used.

Can I ask about your texturing of the hull ?

I have already read the corrections on USARMYMODELS but most of them are a bit OTT for my style of modelling. Stuff like adding bolts to the running gear etc, is all a bit too far for me. The sherman won't even be the centrepiece of the diorama, I've got a nice fat Tiger for that

You might want to use a set of treads (like in the above picture) from another tank kit. The set that is included in the kit are a bit 'stiff' and are going to cause the active suspension to lift up.

I built the very same kit earlier this year and it's a fun build except for the treads. Hope this helps.

I used the hull interior from an Academy M10 in my M4A1. As far as hull texturing I use a mix of Testors liquid & tube cement. Dab a bit of the mix of the model with the applicator and keep on dabbing till "strings start to form. You can adjust the coarseness by adding additional glue mix or toneing down by using straight liquid cement. The trnny can be built from plastic sheeting/strips etc if you have good photos but will take some work (did it before Academy came out with their TD series).
Tracks can be scronged from any Sherman kit (you may have to use the other kits drive sprocket as well).

My polish M4A1 with Academy track/ DML armour.

Pat,

I just love the poses of that crew on your model. Painted up it will look like so many candid crew shots from the war. If you take a photo from the same position when it's done, you could print it in B&W and it would look very cool.

Jon I did as INDIA11A suggests but with a tweak I dissolved some sprue in the liquid cement and applied with a brush. The tracks are stiff. I used a Tamiya set.
The one correction you really should make is to the gun, either replace it or sand away the step in it. It shouldn't be there.
Paul, thanks for the compliment I'll post a pic in black and white when I'm finished

I jsut saw on another thread/forum that there will be a USMC photographer available from Warriors soon. A few mods to make him an army or civilian photographer and you have a really good dio right there.

Looking forward to the photos when it's done.
