Finally, we have access to the museum again.

Later,
Tim

From the museums's website
GOOD NEWS!
APG IS NOW ACCESSIBLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

You can now visit the Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The Proving Ground has instituted a day pass for individuals that do not have military or U.S. Government I.D. The Museum will be open 7 days a week from 9:00am to 4:45 pm. We will be closed National Holidays except for Armed Forces, Memorial, Independence and Veterans Days.

The Day Pass will be issued only at the “Maryland Ave. Gate”. This gate is on Rt. 715. The Rt. 22 gate will not issue any passes. To get to the correct gate from I-95: Exit onto Rt. 22 going towards Aberdeen, Exit to Rt. 40 West (right turn), proceed on Rt. 40 through the city of Aberdeen to the exit for Aberdeen Proving Ground (Rt. 715 South). Proceed to the security gate, park in the visitors parking and go to the visitor center with your driver’s license and car registration. Tell the security personnel you are going to visit the Ordnance Museum. You will receive a Visitor’s Pass that will allow you to visit the museum only. You are not authorized to drive to other areas of APG. Proceed straight to the museum parking lot.

Hoorah! It's about time. I was planning on going to AMPS next year and make a by trip to Aberdeen. Up until today, I was thinking I would have to cancel that. Thanks for the post Tim.

Cool!!!

My brother and I actually drove 15 to get there about 3 years ago. Now i'm kicking myself for not taking enough pictures... Do have an excellent on of me posing on top of the Jadgtiger, however. Modeling in 1:1 scale... LOL

I planned to visit the museum this past summer. It was a good thing I checked their site for availability. It would have been a long drive just to see a locked gate. #:-)

Heck, some of us never lost access to the museum

I plan on stopping by there on my way home from Ft. Lee on Friday, December 6. I thought I saw the MBT70 on display over by the Army Research Lab last month and I want photos of it.

Unfortunately, the way I read those rules, you won't be able to explore the variety of roadside vehicle displays unless they are on the main drag on the way to the museum. The renovated vehicles are being placed on concrete slabs around the post. The majority of the museum pieces have not been re-done. The ones that were re-done, I took some pictures of and are posted in the gallery here (not in my motorpool gallery though).

Rob are you having troubles with others? That disclaimer seems mighty intimidating. Just curious.

Rob

Some people take offense to responses, thin skin or something. This is to state that no response I post is intended as an attack or implies that I am slighting anyone's knowledge, abilities, beliefs, etc. And to further state that if they do find it offensive, I will delete it. Not like I need to "up" my number of posts to gain any more rank.

Maybe by next year, the restrictions at APG will be eased even further and they'll allow you to wander post freely once again. Either that, or try to hook up with a DoD ID card holder (active, reserve, retiree, DoD civialian) and try to get around post that way. I may try getting down there next year.

This may be a stupid question but how worthwhile is it to visit Aberdeen?
I ask this because I live in Canada so the trip would be fairly long.
Thanks,
Andrew

Glad to hear that the museums open again. Last time I was there was in '93. Most of the stuff recovered from the Gulf was still at the Foreign Vehicle Maintenance Section. T-55 recovery vehicle was at the museum. If you've never been there and plan on taking pictures, figure on an all day affair.

Andrew, if you are a diehard treadhead, then Aberdeen is a must. It houses some of the rarest tanks ever produced including many prototypes like the MBT-70 the precursor to the M1 Abrams, and Leopold, the famous railway artillery piece that is something like 70 yards long. But if you go, make sure and take a lot of film. 30 rolls should do.

If you are more laid back than some of us, then you should go only if the opportunity presents itself. There are enough of us hardcore freaks that eventually someone will take some pictures of the unit you need and put them on the internet. As I said, I hope to go in the summer when I go to AMPS. (if I go)

I am a diehard treadhead but only in terms of WW2 AFVs
Does this change your recommendation?

Andrew:

If you ever get the chance, go to Aberdeen. You'll think you've died and gone to heaven. Bring lots of film. At least 2/3rds of the collection is WWII vehicles. Too bad they aren't allowing visitors to drive around post anymore, because some of the most precious gems are stashed along the backroads (like the Elefant sitting along side the railroad tracks!) or in the holding pen outside the restoration shop.

Andrew, I took about 60 digital pics when I was there. I'll post some in Keenan's Album in the gallery on Monday. You'll understand while this is one trip you have to make before you die. You will never appreciate how HUGE a Jadgtiger is until you are standing in front of one. They have 2 88's, Anzio Annie, an Atomic cannon, etc.

It rules...
