I noticed someone sneering at the PE barbed wire earlier. Keep in mind that the most common modern (since the late-70s) "barbed wire" is actually "razor tape", which is basically a long flat strip with a wire stiffener in the middle. The barbs are actually sliced out of the metal strip and bent outward a bit. This is most commonly used in spiral "concertina wire", although the razor tape is available (and used) straight and on a spool. So PE will better replicate this type of wire.

In the modern US Army you can find three types of barrier wire, razor wire, barbed wire and concertina wire.

Razor wire is usually seen atop fences like you see around prisons.

Barbed wire basically two flavors. The twisted strand type and the flat type the is bent around a heavy wire, very nasty.

Concertina come in two types see above. Concertina is the large rolls that are used to build a quick barrier and can be used to form even larger barriers. You just have to see a three row triple high barrier if you want to bee impressed with what the engineers can do. Supposedly can stop a tank too.

Had an engineer dig fighting postions for my M901s at NTC. The hammer head was almost hidden when stowed.

Do any of you know how to make a fence with the staight rows of barbed wire? I'm making a diorama of a small battle on a farm in france and i want the barbed wire like they used to keep the feild free of animals. I was also wondering if having some barbed wire places like around the buildings like the germans dug in ready for a fight would be realistic looking?

There's a huge difference between barbed wire and razor wire. When handled carefully, you can get accross barbed wire.... if you don't mind some nasty scraches.

You don't want to try getting over or through razor wire ! The razor bits are shaped a bit in the shape of a double axe, and they are extremely sharp. Not only they cut you when you touch them with too much pressure, but they are especially "designed" to cut you when you try to pull away from them.

If there would be razor wire to keep cattle in the field... there would be little beef left to them by the end of the day !

I have seen a lot of pictures of desert storm vehicles (usually Bradleys) with a role or 2 of some type of wire on the front, or somewhere on the vehicle. What type of wire would this be? And if it isn't regular barb wire how could I make some?

It is incredible how people can be imaginative when designing things to hurt others.. and to make the maximum damage

I'm also interested in wire that was secured to the sides of vehicles during DS.. I know that Warriors in Bosnia were usually fitted with razor wire to prevent rioteers from climbing on the vehicle, but that seems to be a different story.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. I have some more pictures of it but this one is already on the site, I hope it helps explain what I am looking for.

That stuff is concertina wire. They come in rolls very similar to the Slinky toy. When travelling, space becomes a premium and the concertina wire is parcelled out to the various vehicles instead of dedicating a cargo truck to carry the whole supply.
