I am ready to paint my M60A2.

I am trying to decide between overall dark olive, or MERDC scheme. Question is, would an overall dark olive have octagonal block tracks, assuming it is an earlier vehicle, or chevron block track? Also, what are some other units, besides the ones in the Tamiya kit, that used the M60A2s?

Thanks in advance.

I was in Co.C,1st Bn,37th Armored.A unit attached to the 1st AD
When we recieved our A2's new, they were in a dark greenshaded to Olive drab.More Dark greenish.
We got ours from Dec 1975 to Feb 1976,1 company at a time going to Vilseck, getting the tanks and going through the same course all over again like at Ft.Knox!
We changed to the octagonal block track in Sept 1977.Our tanks were still primarily that Dark green color, though a few Co Hq plt tanks did get the MERDC scheme.
I will look to your gallery to see if you have any pictures.

Thanks, I guess it can go either color with either tracks then.

Anyone else with ideas? Crocket?

There's a book called "the Tank Driver" meant for middle school aged kids, which has a few pics in it of an A2 in overall green with the haxagonal block track. Unfortunately I am not home to post pics.

Gino,

I had the occasion to receive a depot replacement delivered in green overall. Within 24 hrs., it was wearing Camo. If you want to depict a USAEURA vehicle, I would definitely go with the MERC.
Third AD and first AD had slightly different schemes. We (3AD) used the black in the "branches" shape, whilst others used black in more volume in the scheme.

When I modeled mine, I went with MERDEC because it looked pretty good with the shape of the turret and the rest of the vehicle.

Gunnie, I agree. Just finished up the MERDC scheme today. Decals and finishing touches tomorrow and I should have some pics of it up soon. Keep an eye out.

During my time at Ft Hood (1973-1978) with 2AD, two battalions were equipped with the A2. I'm guessing the 1/66 or 1/67 Armor. They were painted with both the temperate MERDC as well as the desert 4 color, depending if that battalion was assigned to the 2d Bde, which had a CAPSTONE assignment to relatively dry/hot places in the world. The desert version was quite pleasing to look at, for a space-age armored fighting vehicle! I saw both schemes that were applied with both hand brush as well as the recommended spray guns. Usually, the two 40% colors and the light 10% color were sprayed, while the black was usually hand painted. This kept the overspray to a minimum. Remember that most MOS's in a Combat Arms battalion were not cross-trained as Body shop painters!
