Howdy,

I am doing research for a dio depicting a battle worn Panzer IV crew watching in awe as a new (ie undamaged, never battle tested) Tiger moving to the front. I want it to be in the Normandy campaign, near Caen. I have found a few references giving Tiger unit movements during Normandy (schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 102, schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101 are two of the options I am think of depicting) , but I don't know how to decifer tank numbers as they correspond to units.

Could someone please help me out picking a specific Tiger number that would have been in one of these units.

Thanks

Branden, if you opt for the Dragon late Tiger kit, I think this research is done for you, as it would give (I believe) options for SS SPz Abt 101, maybe 102. Someone who has the kit could no doubt clarify. Bearing in mind this is Michael Wittman's unit, there should be no problem with researching this, look @ eg http://www.panzerace.net/main/ritterkz.asp.
I seem to remember this lists every vehicle in the unit, & the commanders names, so you can even tell everyone who is sitting in the turret!

Branden,

Getting an answer is never a waste of time!!

One more thing you may want to consider... All the pictures that I have seen of the Tigers moving into Normandy, have them heavily camouflaged with tree branches, shrubs, etc. Because the Allied Air power was really hammering them on the roads.

Steve-o,

Thanks for the info. I have noticed that too, although it pains me to build a beautiful DML tiger and cover it up. Oh the things we do for accuracies sake.

There may be a way round this... e.g. both tanks meet in a Forward Repair/Paint Workshop. The cam would have to be stripped off for repair/painting etc. This would also allow the crews to meet in a slightly less hostile, more relaxed environment.

Just a thought...

Branden, though in most cases Steve would be correct, there is a series of fairly well known photos of sSS Pz101 moving to the front and there is no foiliage on the tanks. So if you go with a Tiger marked from SS101 you would be OK.

HTH,
Mike
