i am planning on using styrophone as a base as i wanna carve a ammo bunker and a bunker system into it, do i need to seal the base with anything before adding the ground cover which will be a sand mixture??
Thanks

What would you seal it with?
If the styrofoam is the tight packed kind, you may not need to seal it. If it is pourous and open then you may want to go ahead and seal it.

Just don't use any solvent base products on Styrofoam, or it will dissolve or turn into a gooey mess.

You may want to cover it with a thin coat of plaster, or other prrduct to make painting easier.

My plan was to carve the bunker and detail into it and then mix up some sand and pva glue into a mixture then just put on base, would the mixture hold on to the base??

John i use both of them in my dio that i posted a while back (i deleted the images now sorry)
and they stuck pretty well on the wood base!
The Styroform stuck really nice and then the sand-pva mixture covered the whole thing easily!
You may want to make a small frame around the base so the mixture wont "run" out of it while it's still liquid!!
Good luck!!
Cheers!!

Be careful of what you put on it. I put some celuclay on a foam base and as it dries it will shrink and it pulled it up and I had to screw it down to a wood base to bring it back to where I wanted it. Any patrolium base product will destroy the foam if you do not cover with anything. I think the plaster or drywall based product will work then put on it what you want.

I'm sure that would work, because that is how I normally do it except that I often seal/cover the whole surface with wall putty before I put the sand and PVA mixture...
