THIS SITE has a great little video of a Sherman on the go. It was filmed at bovington.
I don't know if it's been seen before on here, the sherman is a lot quicker than I thought! The turret turns fast too.
Anyway I'll shut up now and you can go have a look!

:-) I wouldn't have any trouble beating it in my honda, but the 1.5mm thick panels of my car probably wouldn't do me any favours as far as that main gun is concerned
the turret is so much quicker than I imagined, especially when you consider the 1 minute + times some of the axis heavies had for a full rotation.

Gives you an appreciation for just how loud the flippin things are on the inside! Only thing louder would be our Collins' class submarines...

Ken Tout in (I think) Tanks Advance mentions that the sherman turret traverses 360 degrees in about 15 secs or thereabouts. One reassuring thing I suppose.

playing combat mission: beyond overlord is a great way to experience the benefits of a fast turret. Shermans nearly always manage to get the first hit in when they come up against axis armour simply by having a faster turret.
Actually knocking the axis armour out however, is not quite so quick and simple

Reminds me of Kenny Everett, anyone remember him. Buy yourself a Sherman tank !!
Always a parking space avialiable, just drive into a slot regardless if there is a car there all ready. and if there is a parking attendant who is foolish enough to give you a ticket you are well armed to deal with it.
But I'm telling you the plot.

Yes, but remember, most tank engagements are between front fender to front fender. The most a turret would have to traverse would be 180º (if the enemy target was completely opposite the direction of the main gun). Also remember the tank operates as a crew. If there is a target to the right or left, the driver is trained to turn towards the enemy vehicle. This puts the tank's heaviest armor forward and assists the gunner since the gun gets put on target quicker.the turret is so much quicker than I imagined, especially when you consider the 1 minute + times some of the axis heavies had for a full rotation.

Itmay be true that the turret traversed faster, but Whitmann employed a tactic he had to use when he commanded a stug. His solution to the slow traverse was to swing the whole tank arround to face it's target, thereby speeding up his actual firing on targets. This did however, take a well trained crew, who knew what he wanted. If a Tiger was side on to you and all the sudden looked sorta like I know I would get a shock!

obviously turning the tank is gonna speed things up a bit, but what I'm trying to say is...well, look at the video!! that thing turns so damned quick!!
It's a lump of cast metal from the 1940's !! That's some amazing technology for an old vehicle!

I saw the sherman going around live at bovington in a mock battle. Just need to ask one question, why the hell does it produce so much flippin smoke ?!?!?!?!?!?
Would the Shermans in their prime have done this??
Also it was reletavly quiet compared to the other (modern tank that was there.) when u heard the modern enguine from behind it got considerably louder ! !!!! ... any... Bye

damn i was hoping he would fire a round at the car that it drove past.
It does look pretty quick for a tank but mind you, thats why the allies deployed it in such big numbers....it was a fast mover but not as heavily armored as the tiger hence why it wasnt as heavy and that much faster.
