I found this in a CD of movie clips "Marines At War". It sure looks like some kind of flail tank. Alot different from the ones I've seen from the ETO. On the off chance someone might have some info I thought I'd post it. So far I've found no reference for it at all. This was taken on Iwo Jima, D-Day.
Thanks for any response.

No mystery here.
The vehicle is a one of a kind designed and built by GySgt Sam Johnson in C Company, 4th Tank Bn. Better photos show it built up from odd bits of jeep and truck drive trains, fuel drums, and odd things like chains. The construction, use, and fate of this vehicle is covered in my book "Marine Tank Battles In The Pacific".

Hello Ed,
Thanks and I just ordered your book from a local book store not 5 min ago after reading your response.
Thank you very much and I'm looking forward to learning about this. Since it's scrap parts from other vehicles and such maybe I can scratchbuild this.
Too many projects and not enough time.
And Thanks for your time,
Bob

The second (DaCapo) edition of the book has pretty poor photo reproduction. If you decide to scratchbuild this thing, contact me offline at [email protected]
